Never gonna happen, sadly. Their programs cost money, and they don't want to fund them.
I will sign your petition 'cause I am very passionate about children with special needs. But I think you may be hard pressed on getting this to spread. I know it was written for a class, but you can tell that from the petition. "In my textbook," doesn't help you convince people. XD
as a brother of an autistic person, i'll do anything to help anyone trying to help the cause for people with delays. thanks for caring![]()
I thought the same thing but my professor required us to mention a specific class/textbook so I had to throw that in there. I'll do a little edit to make it less crappy. It is kind of a losing battle since California has no money, but this was more of a personal cause for me than just picking some random topic on a list like my classmates. :\
Did your teacher say you needed to point out it was a textbook/from your class? You can easily spice it up by saying, "Renowned psychologists [or w/e the hell they are] Bob and Joe notated in insert title of textbook here that it is vital to intervene in child delays prior yadda yadda yadda." (source)
People aren't going to care that much about a kid in a college class, but they are also not going to care enough to find out said text is a normal textbook for a college class. It will also strengthen your next sentence, because why would we take the word of a college kid (stressing do it before kids are 2) over people who have written a book researching this (who say before four(? If the everyday person doesn't know you are a college student, and just sees that you are a behavior therapist, they are more likely to agree with you.
Btw, if you don't want this advice just let me know. XD I always tell kids to do w/e their teacher wants them to do for assignments, because they're the ones giving out the grades.
And ya, this isn't just a California thing fyi. My mom is a special needs teacher. As one, you basically have to be fucking nuts to tell parents what their rights are unless you have tenure. And even then, that can make you have bad enemies in the board of ed at your school.
Don't get me wrong, I think ever parent should know their rights to give their kids the best chance of being independent as possible, just that I don't think the gov't would ever encourage it.
Yeah we were required to mention the class we got the information from because the project is part of some Stanford Human Rights initiative. The entire petition wouldn't be so drawn out if I didn't have a minimum word requirement for example because people don't wait to sit there and read a whole page of crap (one of my clients mentioned this). I won't get into all of the details but pretty much the reason why the petition is set up this way, addressing it to the state of California, posting crappy video while I'm sick etc is because my professor said so. I just got a $10,000 scholarship from Palo Alto so I'm super pressured to keep a near perfect gpa. Can't argue with the man.
Two of my best buds are teachers, and I hear tons of stories about nonverbal kids starting kindergarten in a regular classroom because their moms didn't really think much of their speech delay, so that's part of what inspired the idea. My friend pretty much couldn't say a word to this one kid's mom so I know how that whole thing goes.
First light all the people who think that vaccines cause autism on fire, and then I'll sign this.
Win-win.
Normally I'd be upset if someone suggested burning my mum but honestly a) it's Sath and b) it's justifiable burning, really.
It'd be my mom too. Maybe they can chat as they burn.
While I agree with your sentiments it's still important to help the kids that are already showing some issues. The worst part is that those moms that follow the vaccine thing also end up putting their kids on these crazy restrictive diets that have no scientific backing. When we have social groups for the kids (group therapy) we'll give them goldfish and animal crackers for snack time, but there's always that one kid crying his eyes out because he wants goldfish too but his mom thinks goldfish will make him worse.
