What to do about people constantly calling me by mistake

So I live right on the border between Missouri and Kansas and about a week ago I started getting phone calls from 10 diffrent people, All for the same person that's not me. I'm guessing that someone recently got a new Cell in Kansas that has my same number but with the Kansas area code over the border. Any ideas about what I can do to stop this?

Use google voice and change your cell number

Call your phone company. Explain the problem and ask them to change your number. It is weird that there are two identical prefixes so near each other, though.


Or you could just ask the NSA to pre-screen your calls for you.

Just answer with "It's done, payment expected by midnight." and hang up the phone. Or tell them to stop being stupid and program the area codes into their phone when they enter phone numbers.

This has happened to me before. Someone was selling a car (oddly enough, around the area you are referring to), but didn't include an area code in the phone number to call, so everyone in my area code was calling me instead of the intended person.

If you're not feeling any of the above sarcastic responses, I would recommend a slight modification to isa's suggestion:

"I'm sorry, you have the wrong number. The number you're trying to dial has a different area code."

Had something like this happen to my wife back in college. A doctor gave out her phone number as his on-call number at the hospital. Nurses just could not underestimate how many fucks we had to give about patients whose treatments were being held up because Dr. Scratchnsniff apparently can't be bothered to update the info after two months of them failing to reach him at our phone.

In related news, some dumb college bitch from the West Indies who doesn't understand the Internet gave out my wife's Gmail address as her own starting several years ago. My wife made her account as first.middle.last@gmail, and this moron's name is Firstmiddle Last. It looks like she may have the account firstmiddle.last@hotmail, but she has signed up for MoveOn.org, bought tires, made endocrinology appointments, sent in homework assignments, and even applied for jobs with the wrong email address. (Gmail ignores periods in email addresses, so even mail sent to f.i.r.s.t.m.i.d.d.l.e.l.a.s.t@gmail would still go to us.)

We tried to convince her classmates and a couple of instructors to tell her about the mistake, but two years later, fuck her. Not getting THAT job, ya dumb whore...

Freshman year at college, I actually started answering the phone "Not Dominos. This is blank". Campus to campus calls only required the last four digits, so people who tried to order pizza without the prefix got my room instead.

My parent's phone number for years has been what the county jail used to be. Now, that hasn't been the number for the jail in over 25 years, but to this day they get calls for the jail. I've basically always been polite, but there have been times when the other person got verbally abusive because apparently I was at fault. After about the third call in a row from those people, I'd start screaming things about a prison riot, or on one late night occasion where the person was pretty obviously drunk and I got fed up and just said "Oh him, yeah, he got stabbed about twenty minutes ago."

In retrospect, not the best idea, but hey, hindsight and what not.

Also, you could try calling the right number and making sure the person knows to give out the area code when they are giving out their number, as a lot of people are getting it wrong. A text message might also get the point across if you don't want to talk to them.

Years ago, the phone book printed a friend of mine's phone number wrong, and people kept calling that number and asking for Curt Campbell. Almost a year goes back, and he calls the number and says "Hi, this is Curt Campbell. Do you have any messages for me?"
