You can't say that you would respond differently in the situation. No one can be trained to react properly toward the loss of a loved one and you certainty can't blame someone for not responding in a 100% correct way that pleases abusive authority figures. A police officer is a professional trained to deal with circumstances and people like this, he had no excuse.

Common sense tells you that there are a limited amount of reasons that people ignore traffic laws and head to a hospital. If the guy had pulled up to a liquor store and said he had to go because his <insert family member> is dying that would be one thing, but this is at a hospital.

The correct thing to do is believe people in need of assistance and try to assist them. If the guy was lying, the officer would have found out when he was helping them get inside.

How about not being retarded and asking the officer for an escort into the hospital instead? Believe it or not, you can get what you want _AND_ make the cop feel special and important too.

You don't really have to agree. That was a personal opinion of my own. I don't like cops, but I don't think this guy should be tarred and feathered because of the emotional response that comes from matter of circumstance. He didn't act exactly like he should have, but then again neither did Moats.

hmm, this exact same story happened to a friend of mine who was caught speeding (85 on a 65) to get to see his mother at the hospital who was passing due to cancer. Cop pulled him over and they literally had the exact same argument, the cop took his sweet time getting the ticket together, but I remember it taking a long time when I got a speeding ticket way back when. Anyway, my friend was pissed at the cop, and still is, but I don't think there was ever a shouting match and the cop wasn't purposely disrespectful.

I think the only difference is the cop in the OPs story was disrespectful to everyone, even when the story was explained to him. I don't think there's any call for the high and mighty crap and the threat of jail. Especially when people are emotional with the loss of a loved one.

You have clearly never been in even a remotely similar situation because even someone heartless as your define yourself would have reacted very much the same way, im betting.

Funny thing is, he was not nearly as hysterical as his wife. He was relatively calm, and the fact that he actually stood there and took the officers bullshit is testament to that. He said he checked before he went through, and seeing as he wasn't flipping out when he got out of the car, I would place my money on the fact that he did not exactly plow through traffic.

How about had the cop not be an asshole for that long he could have gone in to see his mother in law? The cops behavior was far worse than him running a red light. I feel like you will disagree with this.

Legally according to the same protocol that the cop was supposedly following by being a dick, he cannot open fire on you unless he feels his life equally as threatened and/or sees a weapon. If he just got out and ran the cop could not legally shoot at him.

I don't wish anything ill on you or your family Val, but for real until you are in that situation you can talk until you are blue in the face about how calm and collective you would be and what you would have done blah blah blah. No you wouldn't, simple as that.

Remember this one day when you get that phone call, whether it be a parent, one of your children and someone you generally care about. Go on and tell yourself you will be nonchalant, take your time and get your clothes on, brush your teeth, allow your car to warm up, calmly choosing a CD to listen to as you drive 35 all the way to the hospital all while your loved one is creeping closer to death with every passing second.

But you're right, we simply let out emotions get the best of us. Glad to see Intelligence has a bearing on how you react to tragic news. I can see a direct coloration between the two.

you know if he had ran the red light and hit someone, everyone would be all over the police about not enforcing the law. If my mom was in the hospital with cancer, I would have been close enough to be there without needing to run a red light.

Arent you guys doing the same thing just a different standpoint? You are implying that EVERYONE acts the same hysterical way if the situation occurs. You can also talk until you're blue in the face about how others should/would react but everyone is different. I felt the guy overracted and the running of the light was unecessary. You guys feel differently. You have your opinion and I have mine. Stop crying over spilled milk.

I got in an accident once on my way to DFW from San Antonio, and the Cop(from some little town north of Round Rock) tried to arrest me. I hydroplaned when it was raining, and slammed into a guard rail. My wife and dog were in the car, and luckily we werent hurt too bad.
A Cop comes to help us and runs decides to run My license, and it shows up that I have a warrent, even though I havent gotten a ticket in 4-5 years. He says the warrent in El Paso. I've never been to El Paso. So he handcuffs me while my wife is crying in the rain with a wet dog and no car.
I talk to the Cop and explain that it has to be an error, and about 45mins later he lets me go.
But warns me that if I'm not telling the truth he will find me and arrest me.

I still think to this day that he was the one that was full of shit.

You can say all you want but until it happens to you... you have no idea. When I went to school I didn't speak to my mother for 3.5 years. My uncle calls me saying my mother had a severe heart attack and isn't doing so well. As much as I couldn't stand her I had gotten a ride to the airport booked my flight and was at the hospital in 5 hours. But then again I'm not a tough guy.

I am speaking 100% from experience. I'd like to consider my self educated and intellectual, I have 2 degrees from 2 different schools, an awesome Career etc... what are you basing your "intelligence" criteria on out of curiosity?

I don't blame Moats for rushing to the hospital, but fuck him for playing the race card. Obvious bullshit.

I cut through a corner of a parking lot rushing to my wife's grandpa after we thought he had a stroke. Cop pulled me over and ended up delaying us, so it's just better to follow the rules of the road.

Running a red light though is bullshit too...he could have killed someone else.

I love when argument degrade to hypothetical situations. What if a meteor came down, hit a school bus of children and bears with laser etc...

You are speaking from YOUR experience on how YOU handled YOUR situation. Are you sitting here and telling me that no one in the history of mankind has ever sat at a red light while on their way to the hospital to see a dying loved one? Your experience is just that... YOURS. When it comes to emotions, it can be completely different from person to person.

You guys throw a fit if people don't agree with you. It's comical at best.
