also deejay, I believe the way charity works is you get to write off your tax rate on the amount you donate... so lets say you are taxed at 33% and donate 100 bucks, you get to write off 33 bucks on your taxes. You don't actually break even with donations->write offs, but in essence it does allow you to divert your tax dollars to something of your choice.

This is the first definition I found for a charity tax write-off:

"a reduction in the gross amount on which a tax is calculated; reduces taxes by the percentage fixed for the taxpayer's income bracket"

They way they worded it kind of suggests that if you donate an old car to some fund, the government will lower the bracket that you're being taxed in. Since they lower the percentage that you have to pay, you could end up saving a lot of money.

Yes, and over the past 100 years, the "health-care industry" I guess, is the only industry that with advancing technology hasn't gotten any cheaper. Milton Friedman did a study and from 1919-1939 (before employer based insurance) if our health costs continued to grow at that same pace, they would be half as much as they are now. What's different between now and then? Not a freer market.

While not economic based, look at when Clinton was leaving office, basically throwing out a bunch of Presidential pardons that were almost all complete bullshit and were really just there to help cover some people who helped pay for his political career and to give Bush crap to sift through once he got behind the desk.
