Nvidia GTX 280 + ffxi

I've got an EVGA Nvidia gtx 280 that occasionally "freaks out" with FFXI. It's like some textures occasionally get garbled, and the only fix to it seems to be to completely restart the game. It doesn't seem to happen after I restart the game, but it's almost a guarantee when I start up FFXI initally. I haven't ran into any issues with other games, so I was just curious if anyone else has ran into this problem. I'm running the latest drivers ( 1.80.48 ). I wouldn't think I need to RMA my card, the only other game I have issues with is Mass Effect, but it's kind of loaded with bugs.

My specs:
2.66ghz Intel C2D E6750
4GB G.Skill DDR-800 RAM
Nvidia 680i motherboard.
550W Rosewood power supply (I wonder if this is what's causing it)
1024MG EVGA GTX 280

how is your general fps in ffxi with that card?
i've just installed ffxi with a gtx 280 and its pretty appalling running latest driver. it goes to single digits when running round the ah and other populated places and gfx looks kinda fuzzy. looked allot smoother on my old 8400 gs. it's going to be driver related i reckon

It's driver-related. I have the 980 GTX+ and going anywhere like the AH or MH in WG would bring me down to single digits. I installed the 169.17 beta drivers intended for FFXI and I haven't dropped to below 25 FPS in any zone yet, even dynamis with 30+.

vista or xp? 32 or 64

I'm running XP 32bit. There are drivers for x64, Vista 32 and 64. Keep in mind though that if your video card isn't supported by the INF, just get a modded INF and it should be fine.

thanks cant find any compatibility for these drivers with a gtx 280 oh well. not playing ffxi seriously atm and dont really want to impact performance of other games but if anyone finds a moded inf thats compatible with a gtx 280 let me know. thanks

Added an image of the glitch to the original post. I wonder if it's just time to reformat and reinstall ffxi. It only happens randomly, and it's instantly fixed by just restarting the game. It's like the whole screen will lock up (unable to do anything) for about 5-10 seconds. Then when it comes back it has these graphics errors. Even the icon for Jet Seraweels gets turned into an Icon of a Potion. So I wonder if it's app related or driver related.

I've tried disabling PhysicX acceleration as that was added in the latest driver update if I recall. But that didn't seem to stop it from doing it either. Going to downgrade drivers in a few minutes to see if that resolves the issue.

You're the man! I was just freaking out I effed my card up to be honest, as I was recently playing around with overclocking on my machine (temps never got high though.)

I've upgraded to the Beta 180.70 drivers (leaked) and made some adjustments in settings as temporary workarounds. Still in the testing phase as to whether or not it has fixed it or not. But seriously, many thanks for linking me to your post!

EDIT: Like you, I also run ffxi through my PC through an HDTV at 1920x1080 which also worked fine on my old card. I thought that was a strange coincidence.

if you want to mess around and test some, a newer version after 177.24 and before 180.xx might work. we could squeeze some new features out

Hello, being that this is the only thread I've found that has anything about gtx 280. I could use some help >_< I tired almost everything I could think of, read about, and was told to try. Even so, FFXI crashes/freezes/says I don't wanna play no more and leaves... what have you. Does this after I click Play at the last screen in POL before you get to the game itself.

I really have no idea what could be wrong with it. Makes me sad to see everyone else that has a 280 card be able to play, but me x_x

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It may be unrelated as others have said.

But regardless, a 550W power supply is the absolute minimum that graphics card requires to run on. If it hasn't, it may cause you issues in the future.

I personally always like to go 100W over the minimum.

Little bit of a necro-bump on this issue, but this issue was resolved by installing 178.24 version drivers. However, there are significant improvements between 17x.xx drivers and the 18x.xx drivers, but the 18x.xx drivers caused the problem as shown in the original post. However: GeForce Release 181 WHQL Version: 181.20 seems to have cleared this issue up so far. I installed them a few nights ago, and was able to play successfully for a good 3-4 hours and didn't experience any texture bugs.

I suppose I could have just gotten a lucky few hours, but so far I'm pretty confident that the "texture" bug where the gfx card will lock up for 3-5 seconds then resume with terrible textures is fixed by the 181.20 drivers. If I experience any problems running ffxi on the 181.20 drivers I will make sure to update this thread.

Of course, the auction house still falls down to 14-16fps though, but I can live with that.

Get a new PSU. Drivers can have an effect on power consumption. I would recommend a 750w+ psu.

550w is cutting it too close and is most likely the problem.

i have a 260 and a 650 watt psu, and having the same issue. ill try the drivers though :D

hey, I just got a gtx 285, FFXI visually looks ok but framerates in whitegate are terrible, 14-15 outside mog house, about 8-13 near AH which is just anoying, I am using vista 64 bit atm, I was using a 9800GTX still had frame drops on that but only ever as low as 15, my old 8800GT before that never went below 20 every card I get seems to get worse lol.. I am a tech I have built many computers but something is messed up with ffxi and these cards, I tried a 4850 and a 3870 and neither really worked better then the 8800GT either dispite everyone saying they get 25+ FPS all the time with ATI.

I have done many installs of windows and FFXI, no real change, my system is a intel quad core 6600 running at 3Ghz overclocked, 1000W PSU, 4GB ram (reason for using 64-bit OS).

I can't install the suggested 177 drivers because they aren't for the 285 just the 260 and 280 I am using the newest 181.22 drivers, no huge bugs so far but low FPS.
