    Nikon: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/4 ... amera.html

    or

    Canon: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/4 ... amera.html

The Canon Powershot A560 is marginally better in this comparison, but also costs slightly more.

I have a bit more cash so I was looking at these are they any good? Are they worth the price (I don't necessarily want to order it online since in a few days I'm going to California and I want it by then and can't afford overnight)

    Re: Looking for a camera.

I'm going to have a reeeeeeeal hard time recommending anything made by Casio. Samsung, maybe, but I don't know about that. The optics on Canon/Nikon are far superior to anything else you're going to find in the same price range, especially if it happens to have Zeiss glass, that's a big plus but I'm doubting it for this price.

Also, for the Canon Powershot A550, there's this kit.

    Camera, Case, 1GB CF, Charger.

or you can ditch the accessories and upgrade to this Canon Powershot A630

The specifications that you want to compare are:

Effective Resolution (your images' actual resolution instead of the size of the CCD)
Optical Zoom (digital zoom is fucking horrible)
Maximum Aperture (lower number = better)
    LCD Display (bigger = better)

Samsung = No. Buy a Panasonic before you buy a Samsung. Most Panasonics these days equip Leica lenses.

Mioko, you wouldn't happen to have a preference between Nikon D40x and Canon XTi would ya? Deciding between those 2 as a starter SLR camera.

Miokos Right, stick with Cannon and Nikon brands.

You will get much more bang for your buck.

    Re: Looking for a camera.

I've got a question, I have a casio, and while the quality and everything is great I really like the camera, whenever there's not a ton of light, every picture i take is underexposed. The camera even say's on the LCD "Underexposed", it's a digital camera and I'll have to wait til i'm home from work before I can say the exact model number, but it's very annoying trying to take pictures in area's where there is decent lighting but no photons going directly into the camera.

I haven't been able to find anything in the menu that might fix it, even a flash doesn't help every picture comes out dark.

That said, I like my casio, has great quality pictures when the lighting is good, and takes really good video too.

D40x and XTi are pretty much equals to eachother in terms of specifications. Now you just get to pick which side of the fence you're going to be on in terms of 'Canon vs Nikon.' This is the photography equivelant to Ford vs Chevy or PC vs Apple. So fucking annoying and it will never end. However, at this photo school, I've heard many many many many retarded discussions (arguments) about Nikon & Canon. Nikon bodies will accept any Nikon lenses ever built, modern Canon bodies have the EOS system which will only work with EOS lenses so old Canon glass is obsolete unless you're going to pull out your 1978 AE-1. If you already have a Nikon system of any sort, you should probably stick with Nikon so you can continue to use the glass you have. If you have nothing in terms of an SLR system, I might recommend the Canon Rebel XTi, perhaps because I'm a biased "Canon guy" but also from the observing and eavesdropping I have done on the subject. Nikon seems to be more of the 'user-friendly' and universal manufacturer while Canon is a little less versatile but has better overall quality optics and sensors. I can't vouch for this myself since I don't have much personal experience with shooting Nikon, but it's what I have picked up after 2.5 years of hearing stupid photo nerds fucking argue about it constantly.

    The answer? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/4 ... amera.html

    Re: Looking for a camera.

The D40x will only autofocus with AF-S/AF-I lenses. If you have any older Nikon lenses lying around, they may not work with full capabilities (autofocus, metering). I haven't held a D40x, but the Rebel XTi's ergonomics was pretty bad. DP Review compared the two and said it was a draw, and to go with your preferences. :3

I love my Casio Exilim camera. 7.2 megapixel, takes pretty good pictures. No complaints here.

    Re: Looking for a camera.

It's not easy for a "prosumer" to recommend low end consumer products...

For the most part, the average person can't notice the difference between high or low res images, color fringing or moire patterns, or whatever between cameras so it doesn't matter to them. All I can do is point in the right direction that is going to lead to the least amount of defects that one might be able to distinguish after becoming familiar and/or educated in digital capture.

To me, buying anything other than Canon, Nikon, Mamiya, Hasselblad, or Sinar is laughable.

Usually, the answer is simply "buy the most expensive thing you can afford."

    Re: Looking for a camera.

I'm planning on geting myself one, and was considering either a Canon or an Olympus. What do you have against Olympus cameras?

I easily notice adverse effects given by low quality equipment and/or its misuse, both in audio and imaging, I usually wait and save up for an higher quality product than the average person does. I consider photography one of my hobbies.

I'll probably aim for about a $400 target.

Save up for a Digital SLR imo. I found one recently left at my local Taco Bell in a case, I stayed there for like a half hour no one claimed. It's an amazing camera. A Pentax ist DS. I feel bad for the guy, I would buy this camera in a heartbeat though.
