    Widescreen monitor suggestions

I am going to buy a new widescreen, flat-panel monitor here soon. The size I am aiming for is 22"

Anyone have any suggestions of a brand/model that is good for gaming, i.e. fast response time, no ghosting, or color bleed, and won't cost me a fortune. I honestly looked through the 22" wide screen, flat-panels on NewEgg for an hour reading the customer reviews and specs. and am semi-lost since there was such a variety of customer ratings for each monitor.

The 19" version of this is what I've been using and it's been working well for me.

Only complaints I'd say against it are if you like the screen darker you reaaaally have to tone it down since it wants to overload you on brightness. There is also no setting that lets you switch between say a "gaming" setting and a "regular" setting, but I don't see the point of it personally.

Also, the monitor itself looks nice IMO. There's a lot of monitors on there with good ratings but a lot of them just look plain ugly to me

I have a 22inch dell I got from Dell.com, good monitor and good price - Samsung makes an almost identical monitor with a very near price too, since I looooooooved my 19inch samsung I'd recommend that, and then the dell.

Most, if not all 22" monitors use cheap panels.. but the LG one is pretty good still.

I find that this LCD buyers guide is pretty good.. LCD Thread

Thanks for the link. It has tons of stuff thats gonna take me a while to read through.

When you say that most 22" monitors use cheap panels, is that something that is specific to the size? For instance in general do 19" or 24" LCD monitors use higher quality panels than 22"?

Mostly specific to the size. Many 22" LCDs use cheap Chimei panels. Of course, unless you do graphics or desktop publishing, you might not notice the difference much. 22" is an odd size to me as anyways. It's like a stretched 20"; same resolution, but bigger. You'll see it in the case of some 24" using cheaper panels as well. Best bet is to just research.

    Word up to that.

I would definitely beware of any LCD monitor, widescreen or 4:3, that's larger than 20" and costs less than $500. Do keep an eye on refresh rates and contrast ratios, those are important factors when choosing a monitor for gaming.

Just for reference, I was looking at some tech stats on Apple's Cinema Displays. (20", 23", and 30" models)
    -16.7 million colours
-Brightness, 300/400 cd/m^2 (good brightness, especially on the 23" and 30" models with 400 cd/m^2)
-Contrast ratio, 700:1 (acceptable, but not great)
-Refresh rate, 14 ms (ouch, slooooow)
-Price, I don't know but it's from Apple so it's going to be fucking expensive.

Contrast that with the LG204WRT monitor I picked up at XMas for around $500 CDN (best monitor I could find that was under $700 and had a DVI input)
    -Brightness, 300 cd/m^2
-Contrast ratio, 2000:1 (pwns the Cinema Display)
-Refresh rate, 5 ms (good enough for FPS games, could be better with 4ms)
    -Price, ~$400 USD these days

LG does offer some 4ms models but the price ramps up considerably when you get into that territory. The only drawback to the LG monitors are the rather chintzy stands you get for them, they're kind flimsy and if I'm in a real typing flurry it'll wobble about a bit. Otherwise the LG units are solid models.

I bought this a few weeks ago, and it's amazing. Beautiful Colors, no ghosting, 2ms response time whch is the quickest you'll find anywhere. There's some controversy because due to high demand, Samsung has 3 different panels made by 3 different factories, but all sold under the same model. And you can't tell which was made until you get the monitor. They make an "S" Model - which is the best, Samsung factory made, "A" made by another company that is supposedly worse, and "C" which is supposedly even worse than "A", made by another company.

Anyway, I got a "C" and didn't notice anything wrong with it. Some people complain of bad blue or green hues and hours trying to calibrate it correctly. I found no such issue and it was fine out of the box. Not to say it doesn't happen, though.

If you're willing to take the risk and maybe have to calibrate it, get this monitor. It's cheaper than the same size monitor Dell makes and instead of taking 2-3 weeks to ship, Newegg has it at your door in 1-2 days. Hope this helps.

I just wanted to make a mention on this since i've been looking into a monitor myself. The whole different panel thing seems to be made a much bigger issue than it actually is. If you get an A or a C instead of the S all you have to do is google "installing profile, 226BW" then scroll down to where it say's 'installing the profile' and follow the directions and that'll fix whatever calibration problems there are. i must admit i was skeptical about going with a samsung monitor when i first heard about the whole issue but seeing that it's fixed this easily i'm not really worried anymore. especially when almost every review say's that it is an absolutely amazing monitor.

It's probably what i'll end up getting in the next month or two when i finally splurge for one to complete my new PC.
