General consensus from what I remember people telling me was it's nowhere near as bad as it smells, so I went with this since it was the first thing that popped into my mind. There are plenty of other things that could be used as an example though. I personally love the smell of mildew, but I'm pretty sure it tastes disgusting.

Uhm... don't. They add bittering agents to chemical grade (200 proof) ethanol to prevent people from drinking it. A better experiment would be to go somewhere like New Hampshire where they sell pure ethanol for the purposes of making things like limoncello where you water it down in the process. I've tried something that I could only describe as "As close to pure ethanol as you can get" and for a lack of better phrases it tastes like burning... It evaporated on the tongue.

In the same way that there are different types of beef, there are different types of alcohol. Saying filet mignon tastes horrible because you didn't like how your 95% lean chop meat tastes is just silly. I don't know if pure ethanol itself has a taste, but the different ways it's created and sustained is what usually gives it all it's flavor. (Which is why most beer tastes like shit.)

Also, re: guy who thinks everyone hated their first taste of booze, my first drink was a shot of jagermeister, which by most accounts is a vile first drink, and I really enjoyed it. After I started drinking black coffee, my first stout tasted fantastic. I don't ever remember not liking vodka and white wine.
