Wondering if this is better than the first one, even though I never played the first one, but would like to start out with this one instead if its better than the first. Also, how long was the first?

Never played the first, but so far it's okay. It's got a little bit of Cross Edge syndrome (aka stomping regular fights with no problem, get to boss, main attack overkills 2-3 people at a time), and it feels a little slow at times. Some of the loading times clock in just under unbearable at times, but otherwise it seems fairly solid so far.

I've yet to really get too far into it though, been juggling a playlist that consists of a couple different games and FFXI, so I'm only to a little past the second questing area.

Hmmm, I'll probably try it out for a bit then sometimes in July before Catherine releases. I still need to eventually try out Cross Edge as well, I keep neglecting it for some reason.

It's pretty mediocre so far, just finished up the first generation story. Hopefully it picks up in the second generation because towards the end of the first I just started skipping dialogue I was so bored. Battles aren't too bad though, except for boss fights. You'll get to the point where you waste your AP reviving people instead of dealing damage because the boss will one shot all of your non vit/defense pumped characters. It's still better than the previous game though.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll end up picking up this game sooner or later but probably not until its in the bargain bin price range. $50-60 for this highway robbery.

Should I play this before the original or are there new mechanics that will make the old one feel outdated if I play this first?

If it had new mechanics, I don't remember them. Honestly, unless you're super bored, I'd really recommend skipping both games.

Well I have one of them in my possession so I'm gonna give it a shot haha. The battle system seems fun but the rest of it...mehh
