kuya, you're trying to diagnose my reason for disagreeing with you, but overlooking the obvious. it is not that i have "some knowledge of philosophy" (which i incidentally do, as do i have knowledge about gender studies), it's that gender is, simply, not the only reason nerds (or gays) are bullied. you said they were bullied for "the same reason," which is false. perhaps you've seen me wheel out credentials in the past (like when that "linguistics guy" who appears to have no credentials "trolled me" in some other thread) and think it's an effective trolling method, but a) it's not going to be, and b) i still don't see the point unless you're trolling to save face, which is just as bad as being in denial to save face.


it's especially bad when you're saving face about something that isn't a big deal, like oversimplifying an issue or speaking too imprecisely. just get over it.

edit: topical rambling for the hell of it, what kuya is saying about gender underlying bullying is insightful, but the idea that gender underlies everything is no more true than the idea that race politics underlie everything. are race and gender pervasively important? yes. are there issues whose fundamental causes are not related to gender or race? of course. maybe economics underlies everything, and its effects are felt as gender or race norms, but it's just not the case that, for example, google is avoiding paying taxes because of gender or race. if you wanted to give a full account of capitalism, its ills, and potential realistic solutions to its problems (ie ways to abolish it), you would necessarily talk about gender and race (the former probably more than the latter), but you would need to go deeper than both concepts (and you would actually *explain* both concepts!).

notably again, and maybe it is my training in philosophy that makes me more sensitive to this than you, kuya, i am not putting forth an argument in this edit. i am stating what i believe to be facts, and not arguing for them. argument requires more attention and energy than i have. if you quoted my entire post and replied "no", there would be nothing in my post to prove that "yes". however: yes. this is how writing/speech sometimes goes.

I should have said that fundamentally/essentially/most importantly, gays and nerds are bullied for precisely the same reasons, the reasons being gender. This way, i wouldn't have gotten into this absurd argument over meaningless exceptions and technicalities. Yes, nerds might be bullied for reasons different than the ones gays are bullied, but my argument is that the factor that overlaps the most and is most important is gender.

I mentioned same exact reasons without taking into account particular factors for one group or exceptions because i consider these exceptions trivial. These exceptions and particulars will continue to be trivial because nobody has yet conceptualized what they are and how they work precisely. The alternatives have remained ambiguous.

That is what was annoying me: lazy counter-arguments mounted on technicalities. Well of course there must be other factors, it's too bad that they don't mean shit.
