    Speeding ticket question

I recently got a ticket for going 36 in a 25. It was 11pm on an empty road, cop saw etc and got a ticket. Now it's only for $127 bucks, my question is would it be worthwhile for me to just pay it online or to go to my court date? My court date falls the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and it's in the middle of an afternoon and unless there is a good reason for me to go to it, I would much rather pay it online.

Being it's my first ticket and I'm 25 I'm not too worrried about my insurance because I can always take the day class to lower the point value on my license if it raises my insurance by too much. Anyone have a suggestion as to why I should rather go to the court date then just paying it online?

Just pay online. It's quick, easy, and waaaaay better than going into court.

Get the video from blockbuster. Also, your insurance is going to go up, don't for a second think it wont.

When I got a ticket for 41 in a 25 the prosecuter lowered it to a 10 over violation then the judge lowered it to a 5 over. Went from 4 points to no points. So that could be incentive to go, to save money, but you probably aren't as poor as me lol.

You can probably get it dropped to 5 or 9 over, which will help with points, as stated above. It's your call if that's worth your time.

As is said all the time, shit's situational. It only takes like, fourteen seconds to call and ask, DO IT.

Some places, its a good idea to go- you can get your ticket lowered, or dropped altogether. Sweet, save money for a little expenditure of time! Some places will FUCK you- where I live is an example. I got a ticket that amounted for $100. I went to court because I was a noobie. You know what the court costs were? $400.

I sat for two hours just to be called up, say 'No contest', and 'yes sir' about four times, and I was out. And somehow, that half minute cost me $500 total. Court costs fucked me here

Depends on the prosecutor. The 100 or so dollars the ticket is won't hold a candle to the amount of money you'll have to pay in the long term when your insurance goes up and you possibly get hit with surcharges. What I did with my speeding tickets was plea them down with the prosecutor. Explain your situation, say "Hey, I'm 25, this is my first ticket, etc etc" and say you are willing to pay a heavier ticket fine for a reduction or loss of points. In my case, both of my speeding tickets were changed from $200ish fines and 2-4 points, to a $350 fine with 0 points. Saved me LOTS in the long run. This is, in all honesty, the best way to go about it, and the best advice you will get from the thread. My father is a Lawyer, so I've been around this shit my whole life and given advice to countless friends, and as stated, been in the situation a few times myself.

edit: Ask the court ahead of time what the cost of court is, around me most municipal courts are $30ish bucks.

    Radar?
    Laser?
    Estimate?

If it's a estimate, you could easily win a appeal for that speed.

I guess I will call on Monday and ask what the court fees are first. My insurance renews every 6 months and the new policy just started this past month, will the raise in go on this current policy or the next policy due to start in April?

He got me with radar so it was accurate.

If I remember correctly, you can ask when it was last calibrated. If it wasn't recent, you may be able to get your ticket reduced, or thrown out.

    But I'm not sure.

to all the BG cops out there have a question

Whats the acceptable/tolerable amount of speeding that you guys are trained to look for? I know shit depends on the officer but is there a guideline you guys have?

A cop friend of mine always used to say "5 your fine, 9 your mine" when I asked him about catching speeders.

A dipshit friend of mine went to court to fight his ticket and plead not guilty and got it reduced. It's always worth a shot if you have no shame or are half Jewish.

just go in. if you have no record theyre more inclined to at least do parking on pavement with an equivalent fine just no points. most places dont give a shit about the points, they just want their cash.

depends on the area, in atlanta we have a 10mph grace before theyll pull you over, and theyll pretty much always reduce tickets by 10mph cause the courts are over full

I'd imagine it also depends on how close to the end of the month it is and if they met quota.

If you show up, there is a 1 in 5 chance the issuing officer won't. That doesn't matter in every court, but since you have the constitutional right to face your accuser, most (not all) judges will simply throw out the case. Examine the ticket for things like the color/make/model/direction of travel/street name/offense are correct. Materially factual errors happen more than you might think and could be grounds to have the ticket dismissed. If none of those apply, even if you show up there is a decent chance that the prosecutor might offer to reduce the ticket. Sounds like you were ticketed for 11 over, if your jurisdiction tiers their fines lower for 1-9 or 1-10 the savings could be substantial and they might offer to reduce it to charge that wouldn't count against your insurance at all.

Friend is a cop for a suburb of Chicago and he says that they give you 7 mph over. Like others said it is different for different areas.

On topic, call and ask about the ticket. Going to court usually pays off.

the only reason you should be going in to court is to apologize and ask for leniency because it's your first offense. If you don't express any remorse don't expect to get any sort of reduction whatsoever
