Yo nigga, if you're playing a game where you have to manage your MP and are looking at your equip to increase your STR/MAG/DEF, etc and you have several stats screens and shit like that, chances are you're playing an RPG.
Yo nigga, if you're playing a game where you have to manage your MP and are looking at your equip to increase your STR/MAG/DEF, etc and you have several stats screens and shit like that, chances are you're playing an RPG.
Especially if you have a world map and shit like that
in that case, defined genres aren't going to exist that much longer...every other game coming out has some form of stats/menu based progression.
I always refer to jrpgs based on if they have a ridiculously boring battle system, but the tales of games/star oceans kind of ruin that.
also, on the subject of world maps
I would like to start a petition to BRING WORLD MAPS BACK
What was so wrong with overlooking World Maps that they had to destroy it in 99% of rpgs?
I don't know about you but what JRPGs have you been playing? I mean the FF games have destroyed the overlooking world map but why are you playing the FF series anymore anyway?
that shit's been downhill for a LONG ass time
the last game I played with a world map was cross edge :/
I gave up on tales games after abyss, game left a really bad taste in my mouth for some reason, though I liked the battles.
the only "Bad tastes" abyss can probably leave are the extent of the backtracking and world map travel combined with the terrible loading times while on the world map
and when you get past this one, single flaw, you have a very amazing and well done game
recommend some newer games with world maps please, if you know some that I've somehow missed. Not being cynical, It's just fucking hard to find good games anymore.
Fuck that shit Geno. FF7 and FF12 are my favorite ones, downhill my ass. FF1 was mediocre, FF2 sucked, FF3 was meh, FF4 was eh, FF5 was pretty okay, FF6 was... not my style, but a lot of people like it, FF7 was undeniably good compared to most of the series, FF8 was decent but not as good as 7, FF9 is a lot of people's favorite PS1 Final Fantasy, FFX was meh, FFXII was great imo (many people seem to disagree but it is still rated fairly well so I assume many people must have enjoyed it though it is personally my favorite FF game, XI included).
FF13 is the only recent one where I'd say shit actually went downhill.
The backtracking in Abyss effectively lengthened a game that should have ended 10 hours before. That's no minor flaw.
actually the backtracking would have only added 2-3 hours if not for the world map loading times
and yes, abyss's battle themes are fucking amazing
abyss's story is actually pretty fucking big, the game's length and pacing is very very good
I was talking about these man.
I like 12, it took me a very very long time and multiple attempts to like 12, but overall the series has gone downhill. high point considered by most jRPG gamers is 5/6/7 which I hold the same viewpoint.
