The doorway is entirely too large to work some sort of piston solution. D: Sorry, you're out of luck. Well, unless you wanted a water or lava gate, as those would be doable.

I'm not sure what the limit is on the number of blocks a piston could push, but you could check this out:
Yeah, sand or gravel is the only way to make that demonstrated gate work. I thought that two block would be the limit, but the second gate uses three; I'm not entirely sure how... but either way, it's extremely complicated, and until we get a way to connect blocks past sticky-to-block, it'll be severely limited. Liquid gates are quite easy, though.
[Edit] Oh, hm, okay. It's still limited, but the linked gate uses timers; the lowest set of pistons retracts, then the one above retracts and pulls those up, then those are pulled up by the topmost row. Still really, really limited. [e2] or something like that
Making a gate with fences is a huge pain in the ass especially something that large.
I'm at the very end of 1-4. I started building the elevator shaft to the False King's Throne Room and quickly realized I ran out of vertical room
I'm gonna have to make some radical changes to make it work.
I already took down half the steps that lead up to the final building where the dragon was, I'll probably move the position of the throne room so the floor of it doesn't interfere with the structure below it, and I might even stretch out the final hallway and make it start going downstairs so I can make the elevator shaft taller.
I can make a really tall elevator work right? using water power?
I think you can raise the ceiling now. Not sure what the commands are though.
Knowing Notch, it probably kills small children every time you change it.
Now that Notch is dead/on vacation for life. Hopefully gingerJeb can hop on and add some useful fixes/ideas to the game.
Did the Nether reset? I went to use my portal to start what I was originally expecting to be a very long dig to find a new chunk in hopes of finding a Nether Fortress. Instead I pop out of a new portal in huge cavernous area with a Nether Fortress and some Magma dudes all waiting for me.
Yes.
Have you guys started a new network yet? Last time it was easy as hell to connect to Fort White Vick (my nearest neighbor) which was in the network. Not gonna be so easy this time.
No one seems to want to. I have an outpost there but it's not connected to anything. Activity seems a lot lower.
I can start one later if people want ~_~ basically it was my network to jinns base
I was planning on making a railway from my base to home, but currently being sidetracked by finals for next two weeks. D:
My railway station has been sidetracked between me being busy and the version update. I need to get back to it. I'm connected to Ft. White Vick already, but I have no proper station. I do have a pile of tunnels with track made to allow for switching and for other possible directions besides the one I have. I probably won't have time to set up a Nether path anytime soon. Oh well.
So just to ask, was the Nether reset on purpose, or is it just something that had to happen when the update was applied?
just didn't use it I think dunno never thought about it.
Seems like mobs aren't spawning? I haven't seen any all morning.
Edit: also, anyone else having weird textures show up on the sides of some blocks? Namely redstone and top level grass
Hmm, I did spend most of my time in the Nether last night, and mobs spawned there in large quantities. But now that you mention it, even though I speny most of my real world time in my base/lit areas, I never did see anything outside or even hear a zombie.
Top level grass looks like stone until you break it now. Redstone is really odd for me too. My mob spawner doesn't work at all anymore. Haven't seen a mob in quite awhile.
Also, the snowmen don't melt like they are "supposed" to.
