    I've played single player with 256, even at default ram settings the loading times and memory usage was pretty much same as normal

    now 512 and 1028... <_<; lets just say it gets uuuugly lol. Although the terrain generation is pretty epic, and the lag isn't bad at all once you actually generate the terrain. It's mainly the first time you generate it, oh god does it lag. like whoabad.

    I know there's a cubic chunks mod that supposedly gets around this by making the chunks load in 17x17x17 cubes instead of columns, if that helps. I know the height of that mod can get pretty damn epic, like 64,000 or something blocks tall lol.

    That's the lag I'm worried about. The first few thousand blocks in every direction will be explored fast and hot which even now (with 128 cap) lags the fucking shit out of the server.

    Well, its a one time lag, and ragns did do something to improve the memory usage if i remember right. It seemed to help quite a bit, since even with 7 people on at one point there was no perceptible lag. (to me, i dunno about ya'll and your crappy ass comps with 512 megs of memory. :D )

    also, fuck prealgebra, fuck sequences, and fuck all these formulas i gotta remember for a test instead of paying attention on why they work and how to use them. why can't teachers just give us a sheet with the formulas at the beginning of the test? it's not like we won't know how to use them if we didn't study, and in real life you're either A) not going to use the formulas like ever, in which case you can just look it up online when you need it, or B) will use it so often in your line of work you'll memorize them on your own. >:

    gotta keep in mind its a buggy map since it was generated with 1.8 terrain generator, which changed in 1.9. the server's probably just frying itself trying to figure out how to generate new terrain with conflicting terrain codes or something.

    Depending on if you picked the sea level at 64 or 128, you may also have some epic ocean depths too. I know when i tried the 1028 one for fun, oh gods did the sea go down deep. @_@ (even with zombe's fly mod and speed boost i nearly drowned going to bottom and up lol)

    I don't understand nether portal connections, I built a nether portal at my base, but when I come back through to the overworld I come out like really far away in someone else's portal. I thought they defaulted to the closest one, why is it so far away, I don't understand!

    You need to build one that connects to your portal. Take the coordinates of your normal realm portal and divide by 8. Find that spot in the nether. Build a portal. Profit.

    Ok, so I entered the nether, mined the obsidian from the nether side portal to move it, ...and realized I didn't have flint/steel. Ah crap. So made a box to store all my valuables I had on me at the time. I started looking for another portal. Died. Grabbed a sword from base, went back in. This time the portal gets created in a new spot that actually does connect with my base portal. Buuut it's floating in the air over a lava pit with no land within ~40 blocks. So I start making a bridge to the nearest side that looks like it has cool stuff, find the old portal and my box of valuables. YAY! So then I head to the fortress where I died to collect my dropped loot, and proceed to die multiple times as I move this pile of loot closer and closer to the exit of the fortress. Finally succeed by just walling in the pigmen and digging through some walls to flank em.

    Good times!

    Let's make a hardcore server!

    Its due to rounding. Every square in the nether is something like 8 blocks of real world distance. So you hop in your portal, it does the division, and then rounds to a whole number to get the coordinates of its nether position. Then when you hop back in, and multiply the rounded nether coordinates by 8 this time, the newly calculated real world coordinates happen to be closer to another real world portal and bam, you pop out of one you weren't expecting. Some people intentionally place portals to get really fast 1-way transportation without having to walk in the nether.

    At least I'm pretty sure thats the reason.

    Easiest way to fix a connection problem like that is to coordinate with another person. Person A goes into the Nether and extinguishes the existing portal via pouring lava or knocking out an integral block. Person B then enters the Nether via the preferred overworld portal. The portal in the overworld sees no active portal in the Nether and forces a new portal to spawn. Either person can then reignite the original portal on the Nether side and viola, two distinct portals in the Nether connecting to two distinct portals in the overworld.

    So, I died on the server like 5 days ago and my game froze as soon as I died. Now every time I connect to the server my character dies immediately and my game freezes again.
