How big is a chunk anyways?

16x16 blocks square, and includes everything (128 blocks) from top to bottom limits.

And for reference, the game loads into memory the 9x9 grid of chunks around you (81 chunks, or ~21k blocks square, or ~2.7 million blocks in volume), but only the 4x4 chunks centered around you (16 chunks, or ~4100 blocks square, or ~500k blocks in volume) will be going through their scripts and processing activity (e.g. growing trees, mob spawning, etc.).

What mod allows you to lock off chunks like that anyways?

Bit curious if Notch will ever make something like that official. Would be a lot easier if you could hit a key to visibly see where a chunk starts/ends, would make it a joke to assign building lots to each player to prevent griefing within the residential areas.

I'm not sure how I feel about these new little random lakes he threw into the random terrain generation. They seem way too abundant and small and end up just making tons of awkward little crevasses in the sides of hills and islands.

Is there a typical timeframe that's good to log-on? Barely anyone on when I hop on throughout parts of the day.

Granted I don't interact much since I built my house way out in the middle of fucking nowhere.

Probably explains why it hasn't been griefed yet.

Mainly been working on mob-proofing my house since I've not been on a lot since the mob update. Diagonal line of cactus seems to work well enough for now. What I need to do now though is burrow a tunnel from my house to my mining location. Hate making death runs to it during the night. Last thing I want is to lag up near a creeper and have it blow up on me.


Btw Ragns, by any chance if you ever nuke the current world, do you think you could make a backup of it and host it up somewhere for those of us who'd like a local copy? Will be nice whenever there's an easy-to-use chunk extraction program that allows you to pick up a chunk from one land and have it positioned in another. Would just hate to lose the house I'm working on permanently.

seems someone has burnt down some trees and something tall( no clue what it was) near the spawn. also looks like something was nuked right next to it lol.

I noticed the trees burnt down last night. The nuke is due to a creeper blowing up next to me while I was over there.

Also, go figure that I can't find my house, lol. Really makes me wonder where the frig it is compared to the rest of the world. I guess I could make a large totem pole or something to help spot it next time you update the map.

Anyone elses' server having a large spike in CPU usage compared to before? It used to idle around 2-3% on my mac with a couple players on playing normally, now it's sitting at 24%.

Yea...i can't go above like 10 blocks above sea level otherwise i go to 1 fps and no blocks EVER will load for me, have to go back down to play....i think i'll wait a bit for him to fix the "beta"...(also i fucking fucking fuck forgot to buy a gift code this morning....FUCK)
