Bleh, wish I didn't miss it.
Going to farm some hellstone and build a scout tower near HQ in the meantime.
oh shit hell works now?
I was considering building a home there, for a sort of hardcore mode, but realized I didn't have any normal materials with which to make even basic tools.
Well that took some time to do.....

Speaking of fortifying hell... Singleplayer, but I did manage to make a pretty sweet home away from home.
The house, 2 stories and hanging over a massive cliff above the biggest lava lake I've seen. (Cobblestone walkways leading from my portal to all important locales so Ghasts can't screw up my paths)

A better, underside view of the architecture.

The upstairs room, with a great view where the Ghasts stare back at me through the glass.

The view from my balcony. You can see my 2nd portal waaaaay out there on that island.

Arriving on my little island way out in the middle of Lake Hell.

I do have a bunch of pictures of my other modern structures (like my art gallery) floating around somewhere, but this one was by far the most annoying to make... but getting that portal way out there was the biggest pain in the ass.
I forget if it was mentioned, but if you make a portal on the overworld, enter and find yourself in hell, then move some distance away and build a portal to pop out of, where within the 16x16 possible area does it tend to put the portal? In the center? On top of whatever the highest block is in the area? (e.g. not randomly in some underground cave system)
I haven't played much with it in single player yet.
You know, I had originally assumed that it would place the portal on the surface or on the highest block by default, but it might actually look for the highest flat 1x4 area or something... My 2nd portal put me a good 20 blocks underground inside some massive caves. I tried to get to the surface but I kept breaking through the ocean floor so I stopped bothering and just use that portal to access my new massive mine which actually has Lapis Lazuli. So yeah, you're not guaranteed to pop out above sea level by any means, but I'm not sure how the game figures out how to place a destination portal. I'd have to assume something was keeping it from placing it on the surface for me, be it water, lava, over-hanging trees, sloped terrain, or something.
Well, going from overworld to hell is easy enough, since anywhere you place a portal within a 16x16 block grid will correspond to only one location in hell. I'm just wondering, if you build a new portal in hell, where in the corresponding 16x16 area in the overworld will you pop out? Guess if you want to fine-tune the portal location in the overworld, you could just make your portal in hell, pop out, tear the overworld version down, then build a new one in the exact spot you like. It should correspond to the same spot in hell.
Though, have you ever popped in hell only to discover that it created the portal at the bottom of a lava lake?
Is there a means of having a server not call home to retrieve/verify user data? Minecraft site has been timing out on me, and I can't access my own server while it remains so. Quite annoying.
Thanks Ragns, didn't realize that was in the server.properties.
Anyone also got a list of materials which are ghast proof? @.@
Seems like someone demolished half of my tower since last night, and also flooded the area with lava. Trying to repair it currently, but I'd rather not resort to obsidian.
(granted I would love for someone to write a server mod that makes the gold pickaxes insta-mine obsidian so they'd be more applicable in hell)
[EDIT] Bloody hell, fell in lava yet again (thanks whoever spammed a lot of it around my tower -.-), had to reload the game because of the respawn bug, and I get stuck timing out of the Minecraft server. Guess I'll try later tonight.
Btw Ragns, when hMod is back up and running, do you plan to add survival kits to the hell server we can spawn items ourselves rather than waiting on chests to be filled manually each day?
Anything with a resistance of 25 or higher.
In order from strongest to weakest...
Bedrock
Obsidian
Brick
Stone
Cobblestone
Moss Stone
Cobblestone Stairs
Stone Slab
Diamond Block
Gold Block
Iron Block
Jukebox
Iron Door
Mob Spawner
Basically, anything wooden, loose, organic, or functional (aside from Jukeboxes) can be blown up. Glass is really vulnerable to blasts, but they can't see you through it. They can, however, see through water/lava.
Updated hMod on the easy-mode BG Minecraft. It seems less glitchy but still spawn mobs way too lightly.
Thanks. Finished rebuilding my tower with cobblestone, that was a bitch to do with all the excess lava, so I hope no one minded me taming it a bit.
I want to create a large ball of glass to sit inside near the roof of the level, but that'll be a bitch to build with ghasts in the area, even if I build it out of stone first and slowly replace with glass.
is minecraft down for anyone else?
I was having problems with it for a while. It would go down for about 20-30 minutes and then come back for a while. Its being a pain in the ass.
Notch confirmed they've been having problems with their authentication server.
is bgmain down? because I can only connect to hell
