Thank god my whole family lives around here so I don't have to fly in a plane if I don't want to, my only worry is with my parents retiring next year, that when they move that I'll have to go through this shit to visit them.

Look, keep drinking the koolaid if you want, but people have seriously reported having TSOs reach inside their waistbands and up under skirts. That's the fucking point here, we're dealing with an organization that already can't get their shit together and be consistent about their policies and procedures, and now we're letting them get even more invasive about it with no appreciable increase in safety, and there's nothing effective you can do to object.

I mean, far be it from me to try to bring the scientific method and common sense into government matters, but it seems like a lot of questions and concerns could be addressed by simply finding out whether or not scanners catch more concealed weapons than significantly less expensive and invasive techniques.

And no, "you can see under clothes so obviously it will catch more" is not an answer.

I covered this earlier, but there haven't been any official studies I don't think. Just supposed experts on both sides of the argument.

Let's assume you're right; does this new method stop those same exact attacks? Experts say no. A backscatter wouldn't pick up most powders, liquids, or low-density plastics (like the ones the underwear bomber had!), and a patdown would require some very careful feeling to accomplish anything. Invasive as they are, experts also say that the new patdowns wouldn't likely find molded or shaped devices, and it definitely won't find devices they've ingested or otherwise inserted into their orifices. These are the cases the justification for the backscatter rides on; without them, they don't detect anything that couldn't already be found using prior methods (inadequate as they may have been). SO WHAT FUCKING GOOD DOES THIS DO?

If you follow the TSA's logic, yes it eventually will.

Muslim bomber puts bomb in shoe -> search everyone's shoe.
Muslim bomber puts bomb in underwear -> search everyone's underwear, (scan or frisk).
Muslim hijacker uses sharp object to take over plan -> ban all sharp objects.
Muslim bomber uses liquid bomb -> ban all liquids.

I work for a federal agency down in D.C. and all we have is loads of metal detectors and a lot of security guards, nothing fancy. Could easily enter if you knew what to do.
