It's less than that at the prices he quoted (or rather agreed with).
200x 20k = 4m
200x 25k = 5m
400x 880 = 352k
So 8.65m ish at those rates and 200 of each fish. Guessing they're 25k and 30k on your server.
Or you could get them both in the same night like I did, buying only 10 of each and having 5 gug left over. RNG is a pain in the dick at times, but you'll probably want an ebisu anyways, so you might as well put the gil towards that and hope you get lucky.
And with the prep work going into Matsya, fish them for yourself, maybe for friends, but it doesn't seem to be worth fishing them to sell.
It's an investment anyway, 10 mil or 20mil, that rod is a cash crop.
Well, then I don't feel bad going 0/850 on liks paying 20k.
Incredibly happy this only took about three hours of farming:
Almost didn't get the box open either. Total shot in the dark guess.
random loot is random; he might beat the odds and he might not. My point is if we were to calculate the mean number of fish it would take to get Ebisu, that would end up being substantially cheaper than Lu Shang's in the current market.
Ebisu won't always be cheaper but it is likely to be so right now. This is not so much underestimating the quest as it is Lu Shang's being insanely overpriced.
odds are he will pay more for ebisu then for the lu shangs. i only know 2 persons that had insane luck on ebisu (1 being extremly lucky and the other one being lucky only needing to use 150 fish each). The general assumption from the people I know is around 400 fish each to get ebisu (so 800 in total, asked some friends how much they needed to trade in). Its a RNG, we all know how they like to work in our favour in FFXI right?
Random is random, indeed, and this is pure anecdotical, but a friend got his Ebisu this week. He went like 1/30ish on Gugrus and 1/120ish on Liks.
Myself, got EXTREMELLY lucky this week and went 1/5 on Gugrus and 1/264 on Liks, which was about a bit more than 5M with prices in Carbuncle.
Now to level fishing and to get my GPs...![]()
no, of course not, but haveing a lu shang's is nice to get yourself up to the stage of ebisu. Of course that depends on your Woodworkign skill. I am just pointing out that underestimating the quest can be very fatal, I never said to NOT do the quest. I'd rather let people know what they might face.

That shit broke my spirit, especially when people post "fuck yeah, 1/30 on both items for my 30 fishing skill mule lolol". Fuck you Tanaka and your fucking random bullshit.
Nyanja math confused my brain, but the point of the post was conveyed. I also hated that shitty quest
Man, I don't know if they are just making poor life choices or simply have more patience than I do -- but I could never cough up the hours required to get those "increases combat/magic skill" rate earrings. There was only one item that was really worth the days in my mind, which was the crafting torque (for which I also had a significant amount of help from friends with). Something about those boxes just drives me more bonkers than all of the other random number generator based events in the game.
Typo I guess and I never noticed
It's swings and roundabouts with Ebisu items. I was extremely lucky and got mine in like 74 trades total I think whilst my wife went 0/900+ on one of the fish (at which point she stopped counting) and 300+ on the other. Shit was ridiculous and I was scared she may stab me in my sleep or something for a while.
