Why would I unnecessarily pay more gil when I could potentially get something for free/cheap? Granted gil has limited uses these days but I've always never spent more than necessary. Also, a whopping 4 have been sold on the AH on my server. So I assume procuring one would take the same amount of effort as KB, but more expensive.

Meh, gil still buys things just like it always had. Not everyone has everything. People are buying empyrean items at pretty high prices on my server, as well as blue !! drops like Epona's Ring, Loki's Kaftan etc. Everything in the game is still being sold/bought by players to other players via gil so I still don't see how a person can call it limited in the slightest.
