Both, sort of. More so the latter. There are a few writers struggling to vociferate the issues the industry faces, but it goes so much deeper than that. Development, quality assurance, distribution -- so much of it is handled in such a painfully juvenile, irresponsible fashion.

There are tons of dumb, ugly and generally uselless human beings with no confidence issues what so ever. There are also tons of smart and amazing people with no confidence what so ever.

This is a personal opinion, and not some universal true. Outwards, confidence isn't really about what you are, it's about how others percieve you. It's about how you move, talk, how well you can manage to pretend that you really don't give a fuck about what other people think. If you manage to act like you are someone to count with, people will treat you that way, and eventually you will inevitably grow into that role.

The way I work, my confidence is based on the expectations I have on myself and how well I live up to them, so basically I try to maintain about the same level of tolerance towards my own short comings as I have towards others. Works fine in most areas except perosnal relationships.

Plus that whole, if you manage yourself how you want to be treated I believe is complete bullshit, well not completely but for the most part, most groups establish peoples positions from what they are comfortable with, you can act like the person that always has a joke for any situation and that same person who seems immature at times are highly trusted or generally assumed to be reliable, I think it's a pre-determined mindstate of what role you'll play in a group most of the time.
