You could always join the military, and get training, and some employers look at that training like its a degree. Then you also get money from the government to go to college if you join the military. You just have to sell yourself to the government, cause they will own you. I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea if the US wasn't at war.

$14,000 is more than what I pay going full time for a year at a private college. It's pretty goddamn outrageous to expect students to just pull that much money out of their ass.

This. Swedish government already raised the money we get for studying, makes me happy. With the way things are going in England and the states, Idiocracy might become a reality. I find it outrageous people expect normal students to pay that much to get a higher education.

    high-five!

Although the unemployed still get more cash from the government than the students that actually do something productive, which is silly.

I've been busting my ass for my degree while I have classmates who party all the time and then can't pass the tests. I use taxpayer money but it gets used responsibly.

Regardless, they shouldn't be gouging people for tuition money when it's hard enough to afford college as it is.

Not to mention, higher education hardly promises you a job at the end, so forcing you to pay more for it just sounds absurd. In fact, now a days, higher education should be dirt cheap seing as how it's not the highway towards stable employment anymore.

Yeah they do. They're pissed off because they won't be able to spend their student loans on tequila any more. There's two competing desires here which have left us in a compromise of shit. One desire is that education should be free. Another (fucking stupid) desire is that every cunt should go to university. You can't have both. Most of the ingrates protesting shouldn't even be on degree courses.

We do have student loans, with extraordinarily low interest rates that don't have be paid back until you pass a certain income (around £20000 I think).

BRITAIN BACKS MIDDLE CLASS CHILDREN WHO WANT THE MOON ON A STICK Print E-mail
    10-11-10

BRITAIN today threw its weight behind middle class children who deserve everything handed to them on a plate because they're all so very special.

    Image
    We're lucky to have them
As spoiled young people who think they know everything attacked the police, across the country millions of ordinary workers cheered them on and said they were the best people in the world.

In central London, more than 50,000 lazy, pretentious, self-absorbed protesters said it was vital for Britain's future that the cost of their education should not be allowed to eat into their handsome, white collar salaries and their capacity to pay for shitty, new world music and holidays in the less touristy parts of Italy.

The protest had already attracted widespread support even before the middle class youngsters had injured some policeman, broken some windows and frightened dozens of people who had been working since nine o'clock this morning instead of watching Cash in the Attic or asking their parents for an increased limit on their credit cards.

Meanwhile prime minister David Cameron has cut short his visit to China and is flying back to the UK so that he can meet with the middle class children and apologise for threatening to make their adult lives very, very slightly less affluent.

The prime minister's spokesman said: "They are heroes, plain and simple. I could try and condemn them for injuring policemen and damaging private property, but it would be a transparent lie.

"We're now going to let them run the country for the next two years because they're so clever and special and they know how everything works."

Roy Hobbs, an ambulance driver from Grantham, said the lazy, middle class children who think they are brilliant had inspired him to have a lie in tomorrow before quitting his job, taking someone else's money and then punching a policeman if anyone objected.

He added: "I would go down to London and join them if only I was as wise and clever as they are.

"I'm not fit to lick the boots their parents bought them."

Just to note, only a small majority of protesters were violent yesterday, of which those weren't even students.

I think raising tuition fees by that much is unbelievable. The whole situation is just removing the possibility of social mobility in a few years. I've been independent since I was 17 and if I hadn't gone to university this year, would have been living off of nothing because of the amount of cuts the conservatives have put in. I mean, our university has to cut £7 million from its budget by April and we're one of the top research universities. Education cuts themselves deprive growth and so the universities, to afford things like research and decent facilities have been told that by giving sixth form colleges the right to give out their degrees, they shouldn't have issues. Now think about how little a degree is worth when someone who hasn't been through the scrutiny of degree-level work can walk out with a degree from a good university.

Then there is the fact that doing a degree at an upper cap of £9,000 (which most top 20 universities will raise it to), will end up with people doing degrees like Biochemistry, which I'm doing, coming out with £27,000 of debt in tuition loans themselves. Then there is accommodation, which is about £22,000 over three years. Then having to pay off loans because getting a decent-paid part time job with the workload most students have is impossible. For medical and dentistry students, that would end up being double the amount of debt. So good luck encouraging anybody who hasn't lived in a £2 billion dollar house in Chelsea all their lives to better themselves by going to university and reach their full potential. Scholarships will still only be about £3000 over three years, too. So it isn't like those students that are smart will have the capability of affording university off the bat.

Really, you pay 611GBP ($1000) per month for accommodation while a university student? I rented a room for like $300/mo when I was going through uni. Time to learn how to live within your means.

Well I can tell you that if you're paying nearly as much for rent as you are for tuition, you're either getting a fabulously cheap education or need to look for a better place to live.

My accommodation through the university is about £5000 per year, with it being 30 weeks instead of 52. So I have to privately rent outside of term-time which comes to similar rates anyway. You do get cheaper alternatives but it really depends on where you're living and what is included with rent.

Edit: This is outside of London, too. Privately renting in London, which is what I had to do last year comes to about £600 a month without utilities.

    Jesus I hope not.

If someone doing a decent degree (none of this I have a degree in fucking zombie movies bullshit) will be earning massive amounts of cash compared to the regular working man, why should the average bugger on 20 grand a year have to foot the bill? If you aren't clever enough to realise that paying out 50 grand for a degree that will end up meaning you earn an extra million quid over your working life is worthwhile then theres not much to say really. Student loans will cover the cost and the interest rate is negligible. If you don't think that your degree will earn you a lot of extra cash over your lifetime, then don't study a bullshit course and do something beneficial.
