FFS 50 years ago people generally lived with their parents until they got married. Living at home has only gotten taboo in the last generation. Why the rush to get out and put yourself in debt?

I don't actually have that option and for the amount of people that have to move across the UK to get to a university that has accepted them, that also isn't an option. The cheaper alternatives involve paying more for travel etc. I just think it depends on where people's priorities are. I mean, most people do go home during holidays (22 weeks of the year) but in some situations, that isn't possible.

Back in my days (9 years ago), I was paying £8-£9k a year for uni fees. So 3 years + Masters + accom. etc... go figure.

We do get student loans, but the majority of them goes towards living costs. Say it's £100 per week, £70 of that goes on the room. And roughly in a year it comes to £7,000 at the moment, it's panning to be raised to triple that and then apparently you can be billed the rest of your lives.

It's true that alot of people are there for a good time, but it's no different from working and your desire to get hammerd. However, its definitely true student life is like being on the doll, but for those who want a degree they tend to make sure they get it, the others will just fail and they knew it from the start. It's down to the individual.

All the international students (including me and all my 3 siblings) are paying sky high prices £10k+ per annum for top uni's in the UK to SUBSIDISE the so called "poor" locals.

Quit moaning, and absorb the costs like the me.

Besides, times aren't good, everyone is feeling the pinch, and why should students be exempt from it?

You're not even in the UK. The unemployment rate here is at record high.

There are too many graduates in the UK now chasing so few jobs.
Statistics are like 16-18 people going after 1 role.

By implementing £9k a year school fees, we weed out the lower class so that they can stick to their subordinate jobs.

Just read through the thread, one thing wasn't mentioned about the value of student loans vs the new costs, for UK-only students:

(Figures are approx because they shift a bit every year, but for both cases 10% should be added)

If you're outside London, student loan is capped at about £3000/year
If you're inside London, student loan is capped at about £4000/year

Currently in college (average 2 years), there's a scheme called the EMA, where you get paid £30/week for the duration of college excluding holidays if you attend college without fail unless sick, etc. This is to stop people working so they can focus more on college.

I also need to mention this, as I've observed, British people are notoriously bad at saving money. If they have money, the immediate action is to spend it. Every none British, typically Asian, I've met, said the same thing to me and agree with it. So typically unless they're somewhat clever, they enter university with the fees paid upfront, usually by parents, and just £3000, nothing else, no savings, nada.

Unless they've changed it, you only pay back student loan (it links to your pay automatically, your NI number which I believe is similar to the Social Security number in the US) if you earn over £15000 year.

If you've gone to uni for 4 years and can't manage to make over 15k GBP/y, you have wasted your time and money.

I am currently on the last academic year of my undergrad. I've had to take the maximum for student loans each year to cover the cost of tuition. I go to school out of state, so tuition is hiked 350% for me. However, I have a scholarship that covers 300% of that increase, so I am effectively paying 150% of in-state tuition. 50% more than residents. It sucks, but I am not going to riot about it.

So yeah, student loans cover my tuition and books with a little bit left over. Unfortunately, it doesn't cover other things such as rent, food, cell phone + data plan, cable internet, my new PC, alcohol, dates, ect. So, I have to work a full-time job while going to school full-time so that I can live. Its really tough, but I don't have much of a choice. It sucks, but I am not going to riot about it.

My total student loan debt is going to be something like $35K altogther. I sort of rationalize it as car payment or a similar bill. Something you'll be paying for the rest of your life out of necessity (internet bill, cellphone bill, rent, ect). So whatever, I have to pay a higher education bill for 10 years, but it will help me personally by giving me access to larger variety of jobs that aren't available to non-degree holders. (Jobs with minimum requirement of an undergrad degree.) And also help increase my salary potential. It also unlocks graduate school opportunities and post-graduate certificate opportunities. Teach in Japan? Degree needed. Post-Graduate Paralegal Certificate? Degree needed.

It sucks, but I am not going to riot about it.

It sucks that these Britains are being forced to enter a similar situation, but its not the end of the world for them. They can still go to school. It will just cost them a little more in student loans, and they might have to also get a part or full time job (which is not a bad thing at all, for many reasons).

The system sucks for sure, and I wish the US and the UK treated students like Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Its not the end of the world though. They're not stuck being peasants working low end jobs or anything.
