    Problems opening up FFXIV.

I just bought new laptop and I'm having problems with getting FFXIV to work. I am able to open the desktop icon (Ran as admin btw) and go into everything until the play button. Once I hit the play button it opens up the ffxiv thing and crashes. I had this issue before on my older PC due to bad system specs, it wouldn't even open the icon in desktop because of that. I was told this laptop was able to run FFXIV, at least on minimum graphic settings so was I lied to? Seems I was also told this was suppose to run ffxi on max settings easily but I lag real bad with a lot of people with shadows on and still lag a lot near crystals/conflux even w/o shadow. Here is specs:

Think I see the problem, at least as far as FFXI goes. nVidia cards of late have had issues with FFXI (well, older DirectX titles in general).

As for XIV, I don't know, I've only ever run the benchmark.

Ah that sucks then... It's a lot better when I take shadows off and weather but crytals and conflux still lag the fuck outta me and got me killed trying to zone something in abyssea.

Is there also a problem running FF14 with an Nvidia card? Is there really no hope what so ever that they'll release new drivers for both FFXI and XIV?
I ask cause I'm in the process of buying a laptop too =/.

Not sure, I hope not because I bought this laptop to play ffxi mainly but also to be able to have the ability to play 14 (which is shit game atm but still) and others. If not I will feel kinda cheated outta my money considering almost anything can play XI.

You were cheated that video card cannot run FFXIV.

Normally what I use to check cards that run it is either google "Video card benchmark" (http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php)
    or CPU benchmark for processors

I'm sure there is a real way to check it but I don't understand it that well but in anycase I feel like these benchmarks offer a better understanding of the video cards capability.

You're video card's G3D is at 277 normally the bare minimum of what is posted is around 500.
I've seen pcs with shittier specs be able to open the application though on an XP operating system, however the Gameplay is considerably slower. (For example my character literally ran at half the speed of other characters and probably was only getting like 5-10fps).

The processor probably isn't terrible but could be better, the bottleneck definitly isn't on the GPU atm.

That video card can't run FFXI on max settings (changing registry). Whoever told you that it could run FFXIV on max settings should be SHOT. The best video card on the market can't run it on max settings(everything but ambient occlusions and depth of field however, a radeon 4870 can do this too so no real difference between the top 50 video cards on the market atm in regards to this game except for a few fps here and there).

To give a point of reference I had a 9600 GT (G3D rating around 937 and I couldn't run max everything but it ran decently enough anything lower I think would have messed with the gameplay considerably). Now with the 4870 (G3D around 1600-1700 iirc) everything but the above works ok as long as I put my fan to 100% those things run rly hot <_<

Don't buy a laptop, people who say that a good laptop can run it mean on low settings with FPS because you'll have to do research regarding the video card and processor to see if it can do it. And 9 out of 10 times you'll be spending 3x than you would on a desktop that could have ran it a lot better. Not to mention the retained value of being able to replace a part to upgrade and keep the PC on par with standards vs the fact that you're going to have to trash that laptop in a few years and buy a brand new system entirely. (Or just use your laptop for traveling shit like my old gaming laptop that cost $2000 dollars is doing now which I regret considerably.)

System requirements for FFXIV list the 9600 series as the minimum on the nVidia side. The 310M is significantly below that performance wise, and thus, would not be up to even minimum spec. It's nearly bottom of the barrel for nVidia's last-gen mobile GPUs. Even Apple's baseline GPU is better.

That said, I've run FFXI on an HD 3200, which is rated far below the 310M on the site linked to, and it'll run fine at 1920x1080. As was said, as long as you're not oversampling the game with registry tweaks/etc it should run perfectly fine. FFXI performance is really a driver issue, which may get fixed or already be fixed if you haven't updated (or downgraded) drivers.

One thing I did notice about your ASUS is that it should actually be using the integrated Intel graphics for some things, and only click on the 310M for more intensive tasks (nVidia's Optimus tech) - you might try messing with that some, as the Intel HD graphics should run FFXI decently and/or it might not be turning the 310M on for FFXIV to try to run. /shrug

There isn't a universal issue with the newer cards like there is with FFXI - FFXIV uses newer DirectX libraries that the current nVidia cards are actually optimized for. The issue with nVidia is a more general thing with older games - they are working on trying to bring performance up to par with driver releases, but far as I know they've not come out with a driver revision that fixes things across the board.

I was originally thinking of this baby. But I guess I am being impatient with all this talk about soon to be xmas shopping. I've never built a PC before but I'll either be smart or really stupid and try and do my first. Thankfully, and hopefully BG is here to help!

I would second the notion to build a desktop for gaming.

Gaming laptops make sense for some people, but unless you're on the road all the time or being deployed to Iraq or something...hard to justify the crappy price/performance and relatively short useful life due to lack of upgradeability.

IMO, look objectively at what you actually need or want out of a computer and/or out of a laptop. If the reason you want a laptop is so you have something for weekend trips a few times a year, or so you can surf the web while watching TV...you can cover those needs with a $300-400 laptop, and put the rest of your budget into a desktop that'll give you a far better gaming experience when you're at home, actually playing games.

See if you can return it or something, nvidia is terrible for ffxi and it's been that way for a long time. I bought my original laptop for it, it's been over 2 years of updates and I still lag like hell when people start loading on my screen. Time to hop to the red side.

This is why I hate buying new laptops or PC's, everyone and their damn grandmama has an opinion.... I asked here and didn't get many responses so I went with what a friend suggested, which was this laptop. I use it for when I'm at my college and whenever I go traveling, obviously can't bring a desktop with you. Aside from the conflux and crystals though it runs great on max settings. I meant max settings for FFXI not FFXIV. I had to take off shadows and weather, but max settings tweaked with registry work nicely on this laptop.

Only problem is the conflux/crystal, so might have to delete the .dat mod for those, oh and avatar glow as well. The normal things that shit up performance on most cards I guess. It just sucks, every single time I buy something related to computers this always happens. I somehow get the short end of the stick and end up going with someone who didn't have such a great option ;x. Too late to return it now as well and something already broke with it within the first week... so I've been lazy and haven't sent it in yet, so I gotta send it in and be w/o a laptop for 8+ days.

In fact, they're doing specials all November long as pre-Black Friday stuff. I build a PC a few weeks ago and probably would have saved $100-150 had I known. Just how it goes.
