In 2009 at age 35 Jeter's UZR/150 was 8.0, good for 6th in the MLB. He was nowhere near that good unless you really believe his desire to win and calm eyes accounted for the 8 run difference between 08 and 09. Defensive statisitics are unreliable, water is wet, news at 11.

Jeter's +6.4 UZR in '09 doesn't invalidate UZR any more than his .349 ten years before invalidates batting average as a measure of player skill. The UZR represents a deviation of about 33 more hits taken away than you'd expect from his career averages, the AVG represents about 27 more base hits than you'd expect from his career averages. Even middle infielders don't have as many defensive chances as ABs, but it's actually pretty close.

It's still just one play per week. Is it really that hard to imagine that chance, coaching, and a hell of a lot of work on your defense can lead to you making one extra play per week? It seems counter-intuitive to those of us who grew up in the sabermetric era. We've learned to think of 20 runs of defensive value being the difference between a defensive atrocity and a Gold Glover, but this is largely the result of the defensive spectrum. The worst shortstop in MLB is an absolutely incredible defensive player, probably in the top 100 on the planet at playing shortstop.

UZR is more subjective than the offensive statistics, and therefore anyone who knows what he's talking about is going to acknowledge that you need more data to get an estimate of true talent. We have more than enough to know that Chase Utley is a premiere defensive player. Cano's defensive stats have been improving and it's probably a little unfair to him at this point to use his career UZR, but we're talking a difference of a couple of runs.

People make up things about A-rod because they hate him? This has never happened before!

Neil Best, meanwhile, relays a statement from a Fox spokesperson explaining that celebrity shots like that one "are purely random." And though the Sun-Times report said that A-Rod confronted Fox personnel because of the shot, the spokesperson said he wasn't aware of Rodriguez expressing his displeasure with the network.

So, once again, people will really stop at nothing to hate on the guy. Seriously, time to get over it, he's not even that great anymore.

Displeasure could be just a euphemism for SEETHING RAGE. lol.

I don't know how he actually felt obviously, but Arod haters are going to say he was livid and his publicists are going to say he was midly annoyed. At any rate, he wasn't happy about the shot, which is kind of retarded.

(And yes, confronting does give the connotation that he was not pleased with the network for airing it.)

I think you misread the quote because no, he wasn't. The only place that said he was pissed about the shot was some anonymous source to the Sun-Times. This Fox (notice it's Fox, not some publicist for A-rod) spokesperson said that they received no complaints from him about the broadcast. So how do you know he was annoyed or unhappy? Oh, right, because he wasn't, but people will believe anything if it paints A-rod in a bad light.

Perhaps I should clarify, IF he was annoyed or unhappy he didn't make a big stink of it like everyone seems to be assuming he did based on one anonymous report that was proven false unless the official fox spokesperson is lying. Regardless, people care waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much about A-rod's personal life.
