They are making a show so ownership doesn't feel bad about eating his contract. But I mean really, how do you go from throwing low 90s to throwing low 80s in one season. His avg velocity has been 83 mph or 88 with really shitty accuracy. So he's pretty much done.

On a side note, Bochy and the other guys had to have a private talk with Zito after word leaked that the front office was about ready to just cut him and eat the contract after his first shitty spring start.

This was just a reporter talking out of his ass and won't happen. Sure, Zito is terrible for the money he's getting paid, but how many fifth starters are better than him in all of baseball? Maybe one or two. It wouldn't make any sense whatsoever to release him at this point. Rowand, on the other hand, won't be on the team past mid-April. I'd be surprised if he even makes it to Opening Day.

Rowand makes an ok bat off the bench as well as a late inning replacement, but not at that money. Plus just like Zito, I don't think you'll find many bench players as good as him on the free agent market.

Nate Schierholtz is already a better replacement. He's a much better defensive replacement, he can pinch run if we need him to, and he's a better OBP bat off of the bench. We have 7 possible outfielders right now: Rowand, Torres, Ross, Burrell, DeRosa, Belt, and Schierholtz. Belt is going to start in the minors, but he's going to be knocking on the door in May just like Posey did last year. There's no way that Rowand is on this team when that happens.

Well all speculation right now. If the injury bug hits, and Torres, Burrell, and DeRosa are either getting old or had nagging/recurring injuries last year, he may have to stay on. DeRosa may also be forced to the infield depending on how well Pablo, Miggy, and Sanchez hold up. Just have to wait and see how the season plays out.

Ruben Amaro got an extension through 2015. The Phillies had better win another World Series quick before he fucks up their chances for the next decade.

It's Omar Minaya all over again. Blunders his way through the early going, making several of the worst moves in all of baseball, but there were enough pieces in place, and an ownership group willing to spend big now for immediate results, that the team succeeds in spite of him. It took a couple of years for Minaya's defenders and job security to go away, so here's hoping that Amaro manages to fuck things up as badly before the people in charge realize he's a problem.

Outside of the Howard deal and maybe Ibanez, he hasn't been that horrible. Hell, he managed to trade cliff lee then sign him a year later.
