On a serious note, a female related issue is harassment on the train.

There are separate women-only cars to prevent wandering hands on the way to work.

Other then that, see above post.

Gender segregation within companies, though I imagine that is getting (somewhat) better.

    edit: actually, snaggletooth.

AN issue? or issueS? If you want it to look like an actual, you know, well-researched paper I suggest you stay away from weeaboo topics like hentai and maid cafes. They are good examples of sexism in Japan, but only for a small audience - they aren't the best examples of everyday-life issues.
Someone mentioned the Office Lady stereotype, that's a good one to pursue. If you look around you should be able to find plenty of support for that topic because in many cases in Japan women are still looked down on by the older men as tea-carrying servants. Public schools and offices generally may have this problem. Trains is another one, they do have women-only train cars now because of the chikan problem.

It's not completely contemporary, but it wasn't until 1985 (I think) that women could be the technical head of household in the family register... if I'm remembering correctly. They got that right yanked from them way back in the 1200s or so and didn't get it returned until recently. So there is a purely legal angle to look at too.

There was also a policy where after X years of marriage, if a woman divorces a man, she earns half his income (Or something to that extent; it was half of some monetary amount). This caused a lot of males to take up house chores and learn how to cook. You should research it though just to make sure it's still in place and to get the details correct.

Edit: And for once, Silenka makes a good point. If this is a genuine research paper, you better make substantive claims rather than the ridiculous shit you've alluded to (uh oh preposition!).

    thanks for the suggestions folk!

and its not a research paper, its more just like a country profile and just one issue related to gender- i.e: korean comfort women, prostitution in thailand etc

I have a dirty little secret...I like shoujo manga. I'm a sucker for the teenage high school romantic comedy stories. I notice that in these, despite the girl's fondest desire to have a boyfriend and be protected by said boyfriend, she always manages to maintain her dignity and succeeds in something on her own. It's a weird mix of sexism and feminism that I can't quite put my finger on.

For a more serious topic, gender ambiguity in Japan and female empowerment in a male dominated society. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takarazuka_Revue
