I thought there was sort of firmware on 360s that kept you from just plopping any HDD on them like you can on the PS3s?

Also, Dealextreme is legit but the shipping might take anywhere between 1-3 weeks. Just read the reviews before you dive in.

Now my question is if I need to go through all the first few steps in that guide, or if I can just pop it in and format, then transfer my old stuff to the new one?

If you're purchasing it in the enclosure already, you can just pop it in and format. If you were buying the enclosure+HDD separately, you'd need to follow the guide.

Pawn America isn't that bad really if you have them in your area. Stuff is decently priced, but you'll generally talk to someone who speaks English and looks semi clean.
