When it was released in North America (PC), it had matured enough to have subjobs, chocobos, airships, dragon BC mission, advanced jobs, Shadowlord mission, and the level cap was 70 (2 limit breaks?), and it was like 1 update from Tu'lia being added.
I ranked up to 50 because:
1. I want to be ready for new content as it becomes available, which means not only being R50 in my main class, but also trying to get as many useful abilities as possible from other classes. ("e-peen")
2. I met a lot of cool people while grinding and I wanted to keep up with them. (social aspect)
Current content and incentives have very little to do with advancement right now except in the short term, i.e. you're R29 and you really really want to hit R30 for that class quest, but if you're R1, that's not powerful enough of an incentive. I believe what Cel's referring to is FFXI between JP PS2 release and NA PC release, as there was a distinct group of players who imported FFXI and played pre-Zilart.
I am well aware that there are much more practical reasons for wanting to reach the cap quickly than e-peen. I think the two sides to this "play or no?" argument is thinking extremely short term (Grinding to 50 is all there is right now! It has no point and isn't fun! Wait until there's a light at the end of the tunnel before even touching the game if at all!) and the long term (The game is obviously going to get better! I want to be ready for it by having my subs leveled and having immediate access to new higher-level content!).
It's pretty ignorant to call someone thinking on the long-term side of things "retarded," "masochist," or claiming their $12/mo is a waste "in this economy." (lol)
Like I said, different strokes. There's plenty of people who aren't just looking for an MMORPG fix and want to just play right now right now right now and bounce from one to another with a genre that's time-sinking by definition. Some people have confidence that it will eventually be great and that their time spent now will be of much greater benefit later. Even if they make it easier for new people to hit 50 come a few updates down the road. That shit is inevitable and you'll never start playing if you're waiting for the last time they make old content easier. There will forever be people bitter/proud about how they did something when it was harder regarding just about all there is to do in a game like this.
I bought the game less than a month ago, played it for about two weeks before I gave up on the game (for now). I really liked the way the game was presented as an adventure, with no apparent instructions on where/what to do, but it got tiring really quick. Even though I do plan to play it again once it picks up, it felt in no way like FFXI where, as it was said previously, there were important milestones. It's sad, because the game is beautiful and the gameplay is relatively fun when in a group, but even at low levels it feels like a chore to play. I personally don't think the people playing now are masochists or retarded, but I certainly do think they play either to chill out and chat with people, or to get to R50 to get their e-peens up. Let's not fool ourselves, apart from a small percentage of people, this game is not worth playing right now, simply because a game should be fun and be addictive and as of now, there are simply no rewards to playing. It's not really about waiting for content to get easier, but for the game to be playable to a good portion of gamers (which sure as fuck should be the main goal of a game, especially an online one).
a) you have no idea what you're talking about
b) you are a douchebag
Leave it to a dumb fucking troll like yourself to try to steer what was a discussion into flames.
Oh mioko, you are the Yin to my Yang. My extreme disdain for this game is balanced perfectly by your extremely defensive and uncompromisable love for a barebones product that offers nothing but the same grindy, epeen goals as its predecessor.
Wait, that reply probably was too generous for someone who's rebuttals are usually the equivalent of a kid singing "Poker Face" infront of me at McDonalds.
Everyone who disagrees with you is a troll, what's new? If you can't come up with a better excuse to put up with 50 punishing ranks other than 'being the first' or making frens on a glorified AOL chatroom, then you aren't making much of an argument now are we?
I'm not the one making short essays struggling to articulate my points redundantly in every FFXIV topic of critique; which, in itself, is the finest form of trolling.
Maybe he likes you.
You know in that way.
What i'm trying to say is he might be gay for you.
You calling someone else redundant? That's rich. Oh man, that's rich.
I'll officially bow out of this neo-flame-wars thread because you got me so good. I'm ashamed and embarrassed for being on topic and objective about that reasons some people might want to play the game in its current state while you remained obnoxious and dense in your inability to comprehend what's being discussed and righteous in your duty to dissuade anyone from spending their money in this economy. Thank you and /ignore.
It might just be me being nit-picky, but I find it funny that you try to act like my point about this virtual depression of an economy being a non-factor to those willing to plop down an MMO investment.
I'm sure there a plenty of gamers out there who would rather take the start-up cost and couple months worth of fees wasted and use it towards something else. I don't care if you are pulling 6-figures, being smart with your money is how you keep it. Now, obviously my comment about wasting money doesn't really apply to someone like that, but I'm gonna guess most people on here take money into account of gaming purchases nowadays.
I definitely won't ignore you mioko, your posts remind me of my japanese uni girlfriends. Would miss you dearly. <3
Dang, notorious bum is edgy.
Anyway, I told mio at least a month ago that the game really wasn't good enough to be playing a lot right now, and what I meant by 'a lot' had everything to do with content and milestones. It's fine if you're playing it casually, like a hobby (as I think all MMOs should be played until endgame, when you switch in between pastime [hardcore] and hobby [casual] every few months), but if you're doing it hardcore right now, you won't be happy. As I read from another post Grey Jordilyn or whatever is one of those people. He wants it to be hardcore and it's not that right. Rather, it can't support that.
But with the money and experience of SE, I'm sure it will be.
Agree with most of the above. Log in after a reset and do all battlecraft and local leves of interest. Log off a few hours later and it's less than a day until next cycle.
But, this is so un-MMO-like: pacing yourself? This method sounds like tackling chores, gradually, so you can tell yourself that you're doing something. Personally, if I'm not a casual gamer to begin with, if I log out due to retarded gameplay restrictions, I probably won't log back in for awhile due to me getting my crack-fix someplace else.
With that said, I'll agree, that method does seem the best way to go for those clinging to hope right now lol And I have a habit posting in the early a.m. and turning into the white Malcolm X. My bad. lol
My solution to the current lack of SP focus grinding is to find an item to farm, find an appropriate mob that drops the item, and have the fuck at it. It's not too bad, since you're not really focused on the SP/hour, it seems to sneak up on you. I got about a third of R38 this way in a few hours w/out really noticing.
