I'm going to have to agree with this. Their's alot of us who prefer to be able to play a MMO in a hardcore fashion. Not having that outlet downright sucks. I think it's having a very addictive personality (which I admit to). I too am looking for another fix. It sucks though because XI's left such an impression on me that it's very hard to find another alternative.
Just by reading this thread, it seems like FF14 is very similar to Aion, in the aspect of same views upon release. It sounds embarrassing to even call this a final fantasy game...then again I haven't enjoyed any since 10.![]()
The only major complaint about Aion at release that I can recall was it was grindy as fuck and that was totally true. There were tons of individual levels where there were just no quests you could do or were worth the time for the reward. FFXIV has had more complaints than every MMO in the last ten years combined it seems.
Just started playing again after two months. Gotta say that after I grab my leves and get to my 3rd or 4th battleleve, I really can't wait to log out and it's difficult for me to stay logged in to finish the rest of them. The fact that I'm playing a MMO that's quicker to solo in than play in a group is just silly. While I'm happy there's the ability for solo'ing, it's just so damn boring. Add to this that if you're not killing a mob in under 30s you need to move onto one that you can makes it a mindless grind. There's no benefit to killing mobs that are harder for more SP mostly due to the SP gain just doesn't scale right. Crafting is even worse with it being so damn redundant. There's no scenery change, no real new abilities; just a grind based on orb colors and spamming standard synth, tossing the occasional rank 10 ability in there all the way to 50. No form of transportation other than anima, no d box, no real search function, no incentive for partying; the game is really lacking a lot. Also pretty peeved that all my lancer abilities look so much alike since for a game as beautiful as this one you'd think they could come up with something a bit more flashy(XI is far better than this). Hell even the new NMs are just a mindless zerg and all mobs die so fast I really can't see there being much strategy in contrast to how XI was played(thinking old school XI where gear didn't make zerging possible).
All in all it's not worth playing at all atm unless you're looking for a mindless solo grind, granted I can understand that people who hit 50 now will be ready for content down the road(6 months) and I'm sure the game WILL get better to an extent. Personally if it wasn't F2P I wouldn't log in to do leves and even now I'm thinking of going to pick up oblivion or monster hunter 3(needs new wii game) instead of playing this barebones game.
Disclaimer: my opinion is based only on the first month of playing and the last two days toying around with a 25 lancer and 29 leatherworker, not exactly anything up there.
Yeah it was pretty grindy, that much is true. I played Maple Story(which btw, got completely revamped and they eliminated 50% of the EXP needed per level, fun shit now!) during FFXI so the grind didn't seem so bad since you could solo all your levels if you wanted to, and it most cases, it was faster to do so. I didn't mind it too much I guess since I was just so happy to be away from FFXI where everything was so clique oriented; I only fit in and was happy in one linkshell over the course of 7 years. When I saw pick up groups for every event in the game that didn't always go terrible, I was sold. I hated the offtimes of not being in a linkshell and not being able to do anything rewarding. I remember for a long period the only event I was doing with a group of friends was Limbus, and for that hour twice a week I was content, but once it ended it was just back to sitting in whitegate or logging off to play another game.
What turned me off from Aion the most was the fact that the game was just one big numbers game. I didn't mind the grind because I enjoyed crafting/gathering so much, and the fact that Aion was beautiful. I wanted to try 14 since 11 got stale, and Aion PVP/gameplay was disheartening because there was no skill involved. At least in XI as a PLD there was the most miniscule amount of skill involved to time shadows, cure without being interrupted (while some will argue against that, feel free, I don't care), Templar on Aion was just button smash. I felt it was lacking since I could literally just push my macros and not even pay attention. Combat seems funky in 14, and all the horrible reviews pretty much killed the game for me before I even picked it up.
The payment method also seems retarded as fuck. What is it, buy crysta but can't for the exact amount or something? They're trying to be groundbreaking in all the wrong fields. Payment in Aion was fine. Time ran out? Okay, input card, 5 minutes later you could be back online. XI I had to make a trip to walmart to get a temporary card that supported their horrible system, pay an extra $3 a month just to keep that card active, deal with the registration service that was always down, having to wait until the third to play at any time because they use the archaic system of billing everyone at the same time, etc.
