Sorry for bumping this after a week (and for inevitably getting some of your hopes up), but is the new version of Chocolat supposed to end so abruptly or is there another version out there?

When it ends on "I see"? Yeah, that's supposed to happen. Common for songs to end that way in this style.

Animator: Gurren Lagann Helmer Imaishi Establishes Studio

Animator Masahiko Ohtsuka (pictured far right) reported in a Friday Twitter post that he, director Hiroyuki Imaishi (Dead Leaves, Gurren Lagann, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt), and others have established a new studio. Ohtsuka acknowledged that it is still a small startup studio, but added that they want to strive to make interesting works. According to Ohtsuka, the November issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Newtype magazine is publishing a one-page introductory article with an illustration by Imaishi on Saturday, October 8.

Ohtsuka collaborated with Imaishi (pictured right) on FLCL, Gurren Lagann, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, and many other works at Gainax. Both animators have not been listed on Gainax's staff pages since at least this past summer.

Well there goes any chances for a Panty & Stocking sequel. also GAINAX is now officially dead with lost of their top talents to Production IG, A-1 and Studio Khara.

Its not like there is no chance of it happening. I believe the rights to the brand actually belong to Kadokawa, the manga publisher, not Gainax. So if this new studio wants to do a new season of P&S they could still do it. Though I probably wouldn't expect it anytime soon. And I hope you guys weren't expecting a sequel anytime soon either, Gainax has only done one sequel and that was like 16 years after the initial release.

It's Gainax, we all knew what to expect before even watching. But still, that never stopped fans from wanting S2 of a show they like. Besides that, can I really trust another studio, or even Gainax without the right people to do S2 justice?

Not sure if want anymore.

Except that in every other case, they were proper ending to an otherwise weird story. As fucked as some of these ending were, it's not like you wonder what would come next.

What is a 'proper ending?'

Evangelion has like...3 endings and they aren't very compatible with one another :D

P&SwG's ending can be seen as aping American cartoons (a common theme throughout) where you just automatically expect season 2 even if it means resetting/undoing all the plot progress to that point. It's not very satisfying if you found yourself emotionally invested in/rooting for closure for your favorite character but honestly you should have seen something coming. Seems you'd only find it 'proper' if you were successful in foreseeing the screwjob at the end.

Evangelion had 3 different endings, but they all offered some sort of finality. Sure, none were particularly happy or easily predictable, but they didn't introduce a new plot twist right before the credit, it's was the culmination of every events you saw throughout the show. You're basically forced to accept the metaphor and deal with it, you don't need a sequel to explain how thing will go from there since the story is over.

There is nothing of the sort in P&S. Stocking's betrayal implies there is a lot you haven't seen, and that events are far from being over. It's not like they resolved anything, the show ended with a situation that is far worse than anything you have seen in the previous episodes.

Of course, it could be seen as a proper ending if you believe that it's just Gainax poking fun at itself and trolling the audience, and that was probably part of the reason why they went with this ending, but I do believe they had more story planned for this one.

I like the idea that the ending is making fun of American animation/shows. Hell, I'm happy with the excuse that it's naval gazing about how many time's they've ended a series with a confusing, senseless ending. Up until that last scene the plot is wrapped up pretty nicely, given how many homages to other works there are the 'last minute mindfuck' is perfect when added with the '...The End?'.
