These guys get their inspiration from history all the time. I've only seen the translators apply pop culture references to the game.

It isn't limited to just Japanese history/mythology. Ukonvasara looks exactly like the real hammer of Ukko, for example. If they bothered to dig into our mythology I bet they're at least just as familiar with their own.
