(Reuters) - North Korea on Tuesday fired dozens of artillery shells at a South Korean island, setting buildings on fire and prompting a return fire by the South, Seoul's military and media reports said.
Seoul's YTN television quoted a witness as saying 60 to 70 houses were on fire after the shelling.
The military confirmed the exchange of firing, without providing more details.

They do this every so often. It's just sabre rattling from the North for leverage in upcoming discussions.

Don't worry, it will all stop as soon as the next starcraft match is set to air.

Seriously though, North Korea needs to GTFO.

(Reuters) - North Korea on Tuesday fired dozens of artillery shells at a South Korean island, setting buildings on fire and prompting a return of fire by the South, Seoul's military and media reports said.
A witness said residents of the island of Yeonpyeong, off the west coast of the peninsula near a disputed maritime border, had been evacuated.
Yonhap news agency said four South Korean soldiers had been wounded in the shelling, the biggest attack in years.
YTN television quoted a witness as saying 60 to 70 houses were on fire after the shelling and TV footage showed plumes of smoke coming from the island. It said a South Korean fighter jet had been deployed to the west coast after the shelling.
"Houses and mountains are on fire and people are evacuating. You can't see very well because of plumes of smoke," a witness on the island told YTN.
"People are frightened to death and shelling continues as we speak," the witness said.
News of the exchange of fire sent the won tumbling in offshore markets with the 1-month won down in NDF trading.
The impact was felt internationally, with U.S. 10-year Treasury futures rising and the Japanese yen falling.
South Korea's military confirmed the exchange of firing, without providing more details.
The attack comes just as a U.S. envoy is traveling to the region after revelations that the North is moving ahead with uranium enrichment, a possible second path to manufacture material for atomic weapons.

    S. Korea is still too much of a pussy to go all out on North.

    Very interesting development nonetheless.

Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea on Tuesday fired artillery into the sea near its tense western sea border with South Korea, injuring at least 14 South Korean miltary personnel and two civilians, the Yonhap news agency reported.
Four of the military personnel were seriously injured, Yonhap said.
At least 200 rounds of artillery hit an inhabited South Korean island after the North started firing about 2:30 p.m. local time, Yonhap said.
South Korea's military responded with 80 rounds of artillery and deployed fighter jets to counter the fire, the report said.
The South Korean army also raised its alert condition, the report said.
Images of plumes of smoke were quickly broadcast on Yonhap television from the island of Yeonpyeong, but it was not immediately clear what the artillery had hit.
The island that was hit has a total of about 1,300 residents, a fisherman who lives on the island told Yonhap.
The South Korean government immediately called an emergency meeting of its security ministers.
The North Korean fire came as the South's military conducted routine drills in waters off the island.
a comment that wraps up whats actually going to happen:
There will be an indepth investigation into this incident in which the S. Korean government will determine that it WAS, in fact, North Koreans who fired on the island... then do nothing about it. China and Russia will hold their own independent investigations and conclude that it really can't be determined WHO fired the artillary and Venezuela President will claim that it was a U.S. attack conspiracy. After which, the UN will continue to send rice and aid to North Korea like it never happened

Stocks crash as a result: http://www.businessweek.com/news/201...dai-falls.html
Nov. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Asian stocks extended their drop, sending the MSCI Asia Pacific excluding Japan Index to a five- week low, after Yonhap News reported North Korea fired artillery shells near the western border with South Korea.
Hyundai Motor Co., which surpassed Toyota Motor Corp. as the largest Asian carmaker in Europe this year, closed 3.1 percent lower in Seoul before reports of the attack. Cnooc Ltd., China’s largest offshore oil producer, tumbled 3.8 percent as crude oil futures fell further after Yonhap’s report. Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd., the world’s largest lender by market value, dropped 2 percent in Hong Kong on concern China will intensify efforts to tame inflation.
“A bubbling over of tensions in Korea is another layer of uncertainty for markets that they don’t need to contend with,” said Tim Schroeders, who helps manage about $1 billion at Pengana Capital Ltd. in Melbourne. “There’s enough going on in terms of European debt problems and Chinese inflation without having to deal with erupting geopolitical tensions. It’s probably just another trigger point for people to sell the market.”
The MSCI Asia Pacific excluding Japan Index declined 1.9 percent to 455.84 as of 2:59 p.m. in Hong Kong, headed for its lowest close since Oct. 12. Japanese markets are closed for a holiday. The MSCI Asian gauge rose 12 percent this year through yesterday on speculation growth in corporate profits will weather Europe’s debt crisis, Chinese steps to curb property- price inflation and concern about the pace of the U.S. economic rebound.
    Edit: And bunds skyrocket! http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSLDE6AM03E20101123
Nov 23 (Reuters) - German Bund futures rose on Tuesday, matching a sharp rally in U.S. Treasuries after reports of North Korean artillery fire at a South Korean island pushed investors towards safe-haven government bonds. At 0705 GMT, the Bund future FGBLc1 was 29 ticks higher at 128.23. U.S. Treasuries climbed around 20/32 to 125-27/32 following reports that North Korea had fired artillery shells at a South Korean island. [ID:nL3E6MN095]
"It's given us a bit of a spurt in line with Treasuries," said a trader.
In the euro zone, focus remains firmly on Ireland and the successful passage of its austerity budget, with political opposition threatening to keep markets on edge despite Dublin's application for aid from the European Union and International Monetary Fund.
"There's obviously decent conditions attached to any aid package and even vague doubts about getting the budget through are not going to be taken well, so it's not going to help the tone in the periphery at all," the trader added.
Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen defied mounting pressure to quit on Monday, saying he would stay in office until parliament passed the budget, then call an early election.[ID:nLDE6AL2AG]
The 10-year German bond yield DE10YT=TWEB was 2.623 percent, down 2.7 basis points while the two-year Schatz yield DE2YT=TWEB was 1.6 basis points lower at 1.017 percent.

Pretty sure every possible situation response with NK has been planned out 1000x and is well known by all parties involved. Nothing surprising is going to happen there, ever.
