The free upgrade is pretty much a triple middle finger.
Don't have all the DLC on PC? Get fucked.
Have the whole game on consoles? Buy it again, fucker.
Have the whole game modded on PC? Here, have another version that looks worse.

On the positive side, given all of the changes shown in the trailer, I'm wondering if they've fixed some of the technical issues their engine's had forever that has limited what's possible with mods. Just being a 64-bit application would solve a good deal of problems. If they've moved from DX9 to DX11, that would get rid of the annoying Win8.1/10 VRAM bug. If the base game uses more memory, they might have actually had some incentive to fix their terrible memory allocator that can only allocate one block before crashing, which is the whole reason people have to use SKSE to tweak with memory settings.
All that would probably also mean re-doing a whole bunch of work on tools like SKSE to get them to work properly again, but it might be worth it if all of the above issues are fixed.
I would assume given Bethesda's general history of laziness that it's likely a straight up port job to the newer Fallout 4 version of the Creation Engine.
One would hope they'd bake things like the unofficial patches into the base game, but Tbh I wouldn't hold my breath.
So Prothescar, since you're more in the know about these things...
Assuming said modders haven't been outright burned from the get go by how Bethesda has handled the Fallout 4 situation, are we gonna see basically everything getting instantly locked down (SKSE, etc) from the start with this new version?
Anyone who is still active will probably lock their mods down unless Bethesda fixes their mod platform before then, yes. More importantly a lot of mods, particularly graphical ones and ones based on skse, are likely to break and require major revisions to continue working.
I suspect this "free upgrade" will have something to do with Bethesda's dedicated platform. Actively ditching Steam for their platform is something I'm probably not in the realm of giving a fuck about.
The game itself will be on Steam: https://twitter.com/DCDeacon/status/742200606530506752
But yeah I can totally see them giving a middle finger to the Steam Workshop stuff for mods
Yeah but who the fuck used the Steam Workshop for that stuff anyways?
The main point of Steam Workshop was to have paid mods, but that ended up being a disaster mostly thanks to Valve. I'm guessing they're ditching Valve's system so they can eventually implement paid mods on Bethesda.net on their own terms
Nope, not buying it bruh.
For someone's that out of the loop because he has no interest in the Fallout franchise, what's exactly going on with the criticism towards Bethesda?
Bethesda announces mod support to consoles
A) Only certain mods will even work on consoles and B) the developer would have to port the ones that do to work on consoles
Proceed to watch every negative stereotype about console players bubble up to the surface, from developers getting harassed on the nexus or other areas to port their stuff over (regardless of whether it would even work on consoles), or their work being outright stolen and put onto consoles without permission (and with Bethesda offering poor support for the original developers to prevent this from happening).
Bethesda has also been pretty disingenuous about the whole process as well, like advertising how the launch of mods on Xbox had 50x the activity of the respective PC version launch. This of course ignoring that at launch of the bethesda.net mods, there we no mods and everyone playing on PC would just get them from the Nexus anyways.
It's not so bad that it has to be re-purchased for a new console, but the fact they're selling it for $60.

Just watched a let's play of the first 30 mins or so of gameplay of Enderal...it is freaking amazing. Much more of a horror feeling to it than Skyrim, actually a realistic bleakness in the same vein as Game of Thrones I guess. The English voice acting is all spot on and the only things that seem to be wrong with it are some editing needed because it was translated from German so there are some odd translation and wording choices and some infrequent spelling mistakes. It seems to be subject to the usual Skyrim oddities as well, like awkward combat.
It uses updated textures and filters, like how Skyrim mods make the game look gorgeous...I'm not sure my video card could even handle this but I'll probably play this once I upgrade.
For the edition being released for next gen has there been talk of save file compatibility? My big save is on ps3 but load times are ass and I'd love to have it saved on ps4.
Been playing Enderal a bunch lately, it's really good. Nothing they can really do about the general badness of Skyrim camera & animation, but they did a hell of a job given the engine they have to work with. Story is great, mechanics are much better than any of the traditional Elder Scrolls stuff, and voice acting is on point about 90% of the time (lower quality ones mostly happen with the occasional unimportant/generic NPC).
It reminds me a lot of Dragon's Dogma, for some reason? Maybe it's the "big central city + open world" format they have.
Mod Support and PS4 Pro compatibility announced (for Fallout 4, too)
Spoiler: showhttps://bethesda.net/#en/events/game...2016/10/04/221We’re excited to announce that mod support is coming to PlayStation 4 for both Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4. Additionally, we’ll also be supporting the new PlayStation 4 Pro with both titles.
Skyrim will have these features when it launches on October 28. The new power of the PlayStation 4 Pro has allowed us to make Skyrim render in native 4k, and it looks better than ever. Here are some screens to show you just how great it looks.
Mod support will come to Skyrim first. We and Sony have worked hard to make this possible. Mods on PlayStation 4 will allow you to modify and create your own content by using our Creation Kit. You will not be able to upload external assets with your PlayStation 4 mods, but you will be able to use any assets that come with the game, as most mods do. By creating a Bethesda.net account, you’ll be able to browse and try mods right from within the game.
We are excited finally to get modding to our PlayStation fans who have supported us for so long. Modding has been an important part of our games for over 10 years, and we hope to do even more in the coming year for all our players, regardless of platform.
After the work is complete on Skyrim, we’ll be updating Fallout 4 for both mods and PS4 Pro. We expect Fallout 4 to take advantage of the PS4 Pro in 4k along with enhanced lighting and graphics features.
