having a blast with the game atm. was hunting deers for hides to level smithing. found a giants camp and sneaked around it when all of sudden, a dragon approached and attacked the mammoths. giants came in and slaughtered him while i fired an arrow or two. they turned on me after they were finished (still not sure why) so i had to run away. returned after loosing them and was able to loot + get soul from the dragon. good times

Just a word of warning... I guess there's a native Blood Dragon that resides in the exact same area as the Dragon that Raerek (the Jarl of Markarth's assistant) sends you off on a bounty for. I had just walked out of Harmugstahl and fought off the scripted Bloodcultist and right as he walked up, I saw dragon shadows all around us. Right when I got him down, I had to fight both dragons at the same fucking time and jesuschrist that was probably the most intense/difficult/fun encounter I have had to deal with so far. I had almost nothing for cover besides the occasional dead tree as I was jammed in a barren rocky path with no overhangs. Not to mention they both kept doing fly-by breath and hover-in-place breath moves which put me at a severe disadvantage. Also, I had no assistance besides a Saber Cat that immediately got its shit pushed in in about one hit.

    so fun

Total random. Just keep levelling and questing, you'll see them eventually.

I just encountered the Ebony Greatsword for the first time, and i'm a bit jealous of the 2 handers. That thing is cool

What stone are you talking about? I don't remember anything about a stone.

If you follow the quest given by those Orc at Gloombound mine, you get a glove piece with Fortify Smithing at the end of it. Though the quest requires you to give it to them, you don't have to and you can still mine there afaik. But yeah it's fairly common anyhow, just keep checking shops everyday.

I think the quest giver was killed by a dragon in my game so I got to keep it. Could try killing them Orcs :D

He's talking about the 3 constellation stones of the mage/thief/warrior that gives you a 20% skill learning boost to that stones skill categories. BTW, there's also a lover's stone that gives 15% to all skills if you prefer an all rounded guardian stone instead.

And holy shit at bears lol. I know they're stupid strong, but I didn't realize how strong till I found one next to a mammoth it had taken down highhandedly.

After you leave the cave with the soldier who you help to escape Helgen, halfway down the path you'll run into three stones. Choosing one lets you level up a particular skill 20%(iirc) faster. I chose warrior(weapons)

I feel cheated, I went to Winterhold and I've gone through a series of quests and have yet to be able to buy any spells. Is this a joke? Why does the mage school not have anyone that can teach me any magic. Even the wizards in various towns sell stuff but nobody seems to sell shit in the college. I'm tired of using my spells from the beginning of the game, seriously.

The various members of the college teach the various arts and sell their books. You'll usually find them chilling in the Hall of bedrooms.... whatever that's called.

Yeah, unlike Oblivion this college is in the middle of nowhere, and has to make do with whoever can teach anything. Hence, the student-to-student learning.

My question is are there better spells offered in shops than fire bolt, and how do you get them? Can any mages here describe how higher level spells are added to the shops? My hunch is it has something to do with your perks, or perhaps the spell level.

And fuck scrolls. They're fun, but that doesnt count.

Edit: New conundrum - while wandering around I found a dragon shrine in the open. Unmarked. Question melees - would you rather be able to warp in, or swing absurdly fast?

The next level fire spells after firebolt is Fireball and Fire Cloak, next in line is Incinerate and Wall of Flames.

I picked up the Fireball level spells from the mage in Dragonsreach, and the expert level spells from Faralda at the college of mages. I don't think they become available until you get high enough skill, but I can't remember what skill level I was. I haven't unlocked the Master level destruction spells yet.

Faralda is also the Master level Destruction trainer, and you can use her to get up to 90 destruction if you want to pay that much.

Right on. I've used Destruction for most of the game, but it sort of fell off as Dual wield got stronger.

For all you DWs and melees, consider:

-A dagger in your left hand. Weapon speed seems to be based off it, so a ballin' dagger plus a good damage weapon seems to be the best combo for damage vs attack speed.

-Whirlwind Sprint is your friend against Super-archers and super-mages. You need to get as close as possible before you're slaughtered, and WS is key here

-Indoors, use the shout that helps the most. WS is near-useless once you've actually closed the gap, if you don't have to go fight elsewhere. It's also much more situational indoors - in narrow hallways there's nowhere to Sprint anyway. Unrelenting force for free bash is good, Elemental Fury for WTFATTACKSPEED (you don't really need that offhand dagger when you use this. You attack stupid fast), Disarm for.... disarming. I look at it as free "magic".

-As a Melee, you live on the border of life and death - either you kill everything and it's no problem, or you die before very much happens. Be Prepared. Quicksave (F5) often. Prepare yourself before big fights with buffs. You may shun the schools of magic, but Oakflesh is a dirt cheap Alteration spell that anyone can use. 40 free armor makes a big difference early on, yet never seems to get old.

-A surprisingly good support skill for melees is, oddly, Conjuration. You don't even need Perks into it to get a good benefit out of summons. Enemies give a large credence to attacks from your summons, and as a melee you know you win if nobody attacks you. Seek every opportunity to land free shots, right?

    Quick Melee-oriented partial conj rundown:

Familiar has no health, but is cheap, giving it great utility as a crash-test dummy - Trap pad? Summon a familiar on the pad and see what happens. Rune Trap on the ground? Familiar can take it for the team. 40 mana means nothing to you, and neither does Familiar.

Flame Atronach is... okay. It's certainly an improvement over the familiar - it has some staying power in a battle, and a health improvement. It's actually not fantastic if you're a melee, as it prefers to hurl firebolts and say out of the way, but it pulls more attention to itself, thus making it more useful.

But Frost Atronach is. the. Shit. First of all, it's sasquatch-size, which means it's big enough to meat shield you. Second, it's fairly tanky - about as good as my follower right now, so that's alright. Finally, its punches deal enough damage to pull hate, and they stagger opponents. Which means, on top of you and your follower, you have a third source of bashing in a fight.

Case in point: Your Worst Case Scenario. Super-mage at the end of that hallway, he's using lightning and you have no resist gear, and he spots you before you can enter the room.
This is a nightmare - if you WS at him, you will still eat a good zap, potentially taking most of your HP and potions. Followers fare no better than you - a good zap knocks them out in seconds.

But if you had Frost Atronach, you could summon him and send him down the hall first, with yourself in pursuit. The big beefcake will close on the mage, shielding you from a few seconds of concentrated spell damage before he bites the dust. Once he dies, out you come, because you've been running behind it the whole time, and now your position is improved - you gained entry to the room, closed some of the distance to your threat, took no damage on the way in, and you still have a Shout available. If you're lucky and the Atronach survives, his first punch will almost certainly bash-stagger your enemy, and by that point he's not even a threat anymore.
