Thirteen minutes of gameplay this time. Has some of the same stuff as the earlier video but they've added more in.

E3 2011: Skyrim’s main quest 30 hours long. Additional content “two to three hundred” more
Bethesda have been discussing the length of Skyrim at E3.

Lead Producer on Skyrim, Craig Lafferty went into detail about how long the upcoming RPG will take for you to complete. Don’t worry – it’s a long, long time.

Talking to Tim Clark, reporting for CVG, he said: “We estimate the main quests take you about 30 hours or so. And the additional content – we haven’t played it all yet – but I’d guess two to three hundred hours of gameplay there.

“That’s one thing we haven’t scaled back on. We keep going bigger crazier. More and more content and dungeons.”

We’ve just gone hands-on with the Elder Scrolls. You can read our trailer analysis here, and grab yourself a nice wallpaper from the newest screenshots.

E3 2011: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has 70 voice actors, players free to explore from start
Lead producer on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Craig Lafferty has told CVG that the Skyrim will have 70 different actors voicing all of the parts in the game, compared to just 14 for Oblivion. The variable quality of the voice acting and constantly repeated dialogue was one of the main bugbears for Oblivion players, who will be glad to hear that Skyrim’s 47,000 lines will be shared between a small army. Not having to pay Patrick Stuart and Sean Bean is likely to have helped.

Speaking for CVG, Tim Clark asked Lafferty how Bethesda plan to make more convincing cities for Skyrim. He mentioned that “we had, I think, fourteen voice actors on Oblivion doing all the voices. In this one, we have seventy different actors doing all the different voices, over 47,000 lines, so we work to make that a variety there as well.

“Hand crafted” towns should make Skyrim’s world more interesting to explore, which is useful, because Bethesda expect players to go off on their own. Lafferty said that the main quest could be completely ignored in favour of pure exploration.

“We’re really big on ‘go where you want, play where you want,’” he says. “It’s really apparent when you come out at the very beginning of the game, you can follow the main quest, we want to guide the player along with it. You don’t want to do the main quest, then, totally, it’s one of the main things with the Elder Scrolls series, the freedom of this world.”

Lafferty also confirmed that the main story will take about 30 hours to complete, but hundreds of hours can be spent exploring. We went hands-on with Skyrim today at E3 2011.

I am finally glad that I can true stealth kill with the bow. I hate piddling away at stuff from the shadows in hopes that the AI resets yet again into "didn't see me" mode because I hit for 3 dmg. However, 300 hours + of gameplay...-_- I don't know if I like that or think its just too much. Fighting dragons looks badass though.

30 hours of main plot gameplay, and 300 hours of doing everything in the game.

Yes, all the elder scrolls are stand alones, its not one continuing story unless you really look into the lore and history of it.

Anyone else notice some of the flickers in the 14-min gameplay video that weren't there in the 7-min video? The 14min one was definitely 360, and I think the 7min one was as well, but I didn't notice nearly as many flickers/edges in the environment.

Overll though, this game looks way too badass for it's own good...

Thankfully, 5 months is perfect time to get some other games i need to play out of the way.

Not like having to wait 9 months for ME3...

Well the dragons being in this game in the first place is a direct consequence of what took place in Oblivion and the Septim royal family, is it not?

I think they are only stand-alone in the concept that the meat/potatoes of the game's storyline is encapsulated within a single title. The lore/mythology/history span the franchise, but you'll never be in the dark regarding what the hell is going on or be expected to already know any preexisting characters. I'd probably compare it to the games all set in Ivalice (aside from the obvious XII/Revenant Wings relationship). It's smart to use this approach because it doesn't alienate new players if they can get past walking into the 5th number of a franchise (which is usually in very small text) and it pleases the returning players for their lust for lore.

Its a direct consequence of not Oblivion, but all the elder scrolls prophecies, which is basically all 4 titles so far. But other than the prophecies have came true, I very much doubt there'll be any link to the characters of previous games. (Aside from Daedra/Aedra obviously)

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim pre-orders to get bonus map, will Skyrim use Games for Windows Live?

Breaking news, everyone! We have just received word from Bethesda that pre-orders will come with a bonus map. And you thought unlimited dragons were exciting. If you pre-order the game you’ll actually be able to plan your route by physically tracing your finger over the map’s contours, before reaching over to press the fast travel button on your keyboard.

The map is listed as “premium quality,” but will it be made of cloth? Cloth maps are on average 150% more caressable and andventurey than paper or plastic ones. You’ll find a picture of the map below, floating in a grey void with copies of the game perched on top, carefully obscuring any information written on the map’s surface. In addition, RPS commenter JFS spotted what could be the Games for Windows Live logo on the PC box of the game, suggesting that Skyrim could use Microsoft’s much maligned system.

Awesome. I love me some cloth maps. Why don't people make these more often? I still have my Ultima 7 map hanging on a wall at my dad's place.

The logo on the box is not the Games for Windows Live one. It's just the standard, generic, this-is-a-Windows-game one. The one that, say, The Witcher retail package has on it. Metro 2033 and Fallout NV both have it too, and those use Steam for DRM/etc.

The Live one is a bit different.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim DLC to be “more substantial” with “an expansion pack feel”
Skyrim game director Todd Howard has been talking to Ausgamers about DLC plans for The Elder Scrolls V. Bethesda’s last game, Fallout 3, had no less than five DLC packs, delivering a series of small adventures separate from the main quest. Howard says that while they have no specific plans in place for Skyrim yet, they want to do fewer but much bigger DLC packs with “an expansion pack feel.”

“They’ve been really successful and we like making them,” said Howard on expansion packs. “Right now I can say that we’d like to do less DLC but bigger ones — you know, more substantial.

“The Fallout 3 pace that we did was very chaotic. We did a lot of them – we had two overlapping groups – and we don’t know what we’re going to make yet, but we’d like them to be closer to an expansion pack feel.”

While the Fallout 3 DLC packs were too short to be deemed full expansions, they were much larger than Bethesda’s earliest efforts with Oblivion, for which they released the now infamous horse armour. Hopefully Skyrim DLC will offer something closer to Oblivion’s lengthy Shivering Isles expansion, which added new lands and 30 hours of additional questing.

For a good look at Skyrim, check out the tremendously exciting E3 footage, with Tom Francis’ scene by scene breakdown, and read Graham’s Skyrim impressions from the E3 show floor.
