Some of you may have heard that Discovery is retiring, and the last shuttle flight will be in a couple months, effectively ending the NASA involvement in spaceflight for the time being.

This isn't really a big loss though.

To demonstrate why the retiring of the space shuttle isn't a big deal, here's a random bit of image based info:

See the red dotted line? That's how high the ISS is, that's where the shuttle is right now.

The cyan area is normal operating bounds for it, the green dotted line is GPS orbits, and black dotted is geosynchronous.

At these scales, the moon is a skittle about three feet away.

This is to scale, and that is the speed of light to scale. The moon is a bit more than a second away for light.

The sun is 8 minutes away.

The two tiny little pins there represent the Earth and moon at scale sizes and distances.
The paper disc is the sun, 8 light minutes away. At these scales you would be hard pressed to distinguish low earth orbit from sitting on the ground.
