Those "shipping" scams seem to be all the rage on Craigslist these days. My gf is trying to sell her furniture before she moves and has had at least 5 of those style of offers on her stuff.
I think they're phishing for personal information more than anything.
No, the personal information is just an added bonus. The actual scam is the "mover fee". The reason they use certified checks is so that it will take time to clear once you cash it, and you'll send cash to their "mover". The check bounces, and they pocket whatever you sent. Your personal information is then used as the fall guy identity for their next scam.
It's probably one of the most common check scams, they also do it for "lottery taxes", "secret shoppers", etc. In a single round on Craigslist or eBay, you can make one or two thousand dollars at 100-500 bucks per person scammed. I've personally seen the lottery ones clear 2k per person.
