"Internal U.S. government reviews have determined that a mass leak of diplomatic cables caused only limited damage to U.S. interests abroad, despite the Obama administration's public statements to the contrary. A congressional official briefed on the reviews said the administration felt compelled to say publicly that the revelations had seriously damaged American interests in order to bolster legal efforts to shut down the WikiLeaks website and bring charges against the leakers.

'I think they just want to present the toughest front they can muster,' the official said.

" But State Department officials have privately told Congress they expect overall damage to U.S. foreign policy to be containable, said the official, one of two congressional aides familiar with the briefings who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity. 'We were told (the impact of WikiLeaks revelations) was embarrassing but not damaging,' said the official, who attended a briefing given in late 2010 by State Department officials."

Confirming the most obvious suspicions of all.

And Lieberman isn't seeking a second term. While it's annoying that he can't be punished for being a cunt about the Wikileaks thing (and in general), it's a relief his dusty ass will no longer sit on the Senate.

Note, that this is the third time that the government, with certain media repeating it, claimed something Wikileaks did somehow harmed the US in some way somehow, and this is the third time it has all been proven to be bullshit.

I'm completely certain the US gov is going to claim the same things again, but i will be genuinely shocked if i see anyone on this forum believe them again for it.

Wouldn't it depend on what was leaked? Your argument seems to be that there is NOTHING that could possibly be leaked that would harm the US.

The argument is that Wikileaks stated policy on redaction can be trusted more than the USG's blanket 'it's all harmful and risks american lives and interests' series of statements. Even idiots should by now be able to see through the government's 'nothing to lose by lying' policy of denial, scapegoating and won't someone please think about the american soldiers rhetoric. It was never based in rational thinking or fact, just raising alarms to scare the public to wage a propaganda campaign against the big bad foreigners.

Do we think they are redacting the "really bad stuff" or are they just redacting sources, etc.?

As stated, the point is that what the government says is dubious, meanwhile Wikileaks is more trustworthy. If leaked material is damaging, then i'm sure you'll hear it from someone more legitimate than the US government, which, has a bad track record for telling the truth. In this instance anyway.

In light of this, hopefully Huckabee retracts his desire to have Assange killed and amends his desire to only half kill him.

I think it's hard to say what their standards of 'really bad stuff' are since their redaction efforts are minimalist at best. The takeaway lesson is not how trustworthy Wikileaks is, but how trustworthy the American Government isn't. Wikileaks is not forever absolved because they can and probably will fuck up at some point. But such judgments are best left to people not working for the President or the Congress or anybody Assange and his organization personally embarrasses.
