I would agree to not contact them directly but if you know where she lives see if you can take pics of the car (don't go on the lawn otherwise you'll negate it with tresspassing). And as others said get a lawyer.

I spoke with, whom I assume, is the boss this morning. Well, he was the only guy who had an office and not a cubicle. Told him the story and he said that the reason it took so long was because he had initially denied it because it was incomplete. He finished the report for me right there. He also said there was no issue with contacting her, but he is also taking care of that for me. Within 30 minutes of me leaving with the report, he called me back saying he called her place of employment, found out she weeks part time, and her new address. He called the officer who filled out the report and is having him come in four hours early to go talk to her.
Nice, well done!
USAA 4 teh win.
Officer just called me back. The vehicle was uninsured, expired on May 5. The registered owner wasn't the driver. The driver has a warrant out for his arrest. The registered owner is being charged with failure to maintain insurance and some other charge regarding knowingly letting another motorist operate an uninsured vehicle.
I don't really care about any of that shit, she didn't have insurance, and now I'm sad.
Sadly, I'm not surprised that it was uninsured since that's one of the few reasons that people flee the scene after an accident. At least you finally got some results from your police department. Now lawyer up and sue both the vehicle owner and the driver.
That does suck. Now it's lawyer time so you can sue for damages. FYL.
Also, did the police say there were going to pursue criminal charges for the hit and run?
Edit: And I bet they thought they gotten away scott free. They would have gotten away with it, had it not been for that pesky facebook. Jinkies!
I'm not going to bother pursuing a lawyer. It's not worth my time, especially given the offenders. I've known people who get in hit-and-runs with liability and drag court on constantly because the other person simply can't afford to pay the judgment. I think they have 3 kids, and I do have a heart. They're being fined and arrested. I'm out $500. I'm over this now.
As an FYI, adjuster said that it wouldn't effect my premiums for those who said that it would.
So did you rent a car or not?
Also, you don't need a lawyer to file for $500 in damages in small-claims court.
Oh look, the adjuster finally decided to pull his head out of his ass and return from vacation on the Turdin Islands. That's what they tell everyone. Get out, and get out now.
Although a better idea would be to discreetly befriend the parents, wait til their oldest daughter hits 18, slyly seduce her, videotape her first anal and put it on the internet.
You may not be hosed yet. I went through something similar, but I was on the other side (stupid cheap ass insurance company lost my check I mailed and cancelled me without me knowing till the day I was in an accident) and the guys insurance company actually went after me for damages. So progressive may decide to rape her up the ass anyways since she is the registered owner of the vehicle, and thus ultimately responsible.
Talk to your insurance adjuster and ask if they will try to sue the vehicle owner for damages. I know I did a ride along with an adjuster a couple of months ago in efforts to prepare for a job interview and she said that if people don't have insurance the company will sue them to try to recoup the insurance companies losses. Worth a shot, but no idea if you will get your money back.
An uninsured driver came up in discussion a few months ago. One of my friend's parents works for USAA and explained clearly that if an uninsured driver hits one of the people they insure, USAA will go after the uninsured driver like no tomorrow. Insurance companies take this stuff seriously.
Absolutely correct behavior by the insurance company to sue the pants off the uninsured people. After all, *everyone* having insurance is what makes the system functional in the first place. If the only people that got insurance was people that could easily afford it, well, insurance premiums would be a LOT higher than what they currently are. Cue discussions about health care mandates!
Glad that you guys made it through this without anyone being physical injured. Don't sweat the $500, money is just money.
