Lame announcement no matter how you want to spin it. They purposely made it ambiguous to get attention.

Wonder if intell should start making press conferences hinting at making a break through at achieving AI only to announce their latest core processor

Actually, we don't need to look into all those 10^15 or whatever planets. Because there are still fundamental assumption and condition on the orbit of the planet, and the planet's distance to the star it orbits around. So, they will only study on those planets which fall under these condition. So far, if not mistake, besides Mars, they only found not more than 5 other planets that fulfill the earth like environment. But I think the NASA right now will still focus on looking for the sign of life in Mars, since it is the closest to earth.

We've also sampled about .00000000000000000001% of planetary systems in the universe.

Seriously though, this is such a cool announcement. Anyone who seriously thought it was going to be life on another planet is delusional.

Right on the money. Its like people were expecting martians or something of the like, this is indeed huge on many many levels.

I'm very conflicted. The data seems solid, but it doesn't make much sense. Much, much more work needs to be shown for it to be really convincing.

This is not an argument if you are trying to say the odd is good. We know how organics molecules tend to assemble together, but we don't know to what extent, and which catalyst is required for life. You can have metaphysical argument, but truth is, we don't know the real odd as long we ignore the exact process.

The odd of seeing life emerge from that bottle is incredibly low (somewhere around 10^-300). There was obviously catalyst involved on Earth that can't be found in such soup, but we don't know them, and we don't know if the final odds is 99%, 1%, or 10^-10%.

Aw, bit disappointing. I was hoping they found bacteria that actually was from another planet, not in some lake somewhere that /might/ survive on mars.
