    I called SE today.

The representative said that there are no plans to solve the ps2 problem other than the reinstall method, even though in an email they said that "this is currently the only resolution *at the moment*," (my emphasis), which suggested to me an alternate resolution in the future, but that is not to be.

He also emphasized that is has to be a completely clean re-install, meaning deleting macros and map markers etc.

This means that disc or disc reader issues will need new(er) ps2s, new discs, or go PC.

On a side note, he said that chat support on the pol website is still available, just not for every option.

So I wiped everything and tried it again and re-installed all of the expansions then when I went to do the update after it checked all the files it said I needed 3.5GB of free space and cancelled the update. I'm hoping they get a fix for this soon cause its starting to piss me off.

A few things: To the person who said the HDD binds to units: They do. I had to reinstall mine into my PS2 after I sent it in to get refurbished, but, all you need to do is place it in, then use the HDD disc to reformat it and it'll work for that unit.

To people saying their PS2 won't read discs: I had the same problem. About a year or two ago I contacted sony, asked them what to do, and they said I should send it in to them. Take out your HDD and memory cards, and they will send you a refurbished one. I forgot how much exactly they charged, but, I still love playing games on my PS2, so, it wasn't a big deal for me. After you get it back, see above statement.

I deleted all my screen shots, macros, emails, messages, everything possible client side, sans PoL (didn't uninstall it) and then reinstalled FFXI via the method they posted using the old discs (I don't have any of the collections, so, had to use each individual disc) Installation took about 2 hours and the update took about 10 hours. I got home today, saw my update was done, and logged right in with no problem. Hope this helps my fellow PS2 users .

So after 2 re-installations and it still not working I decided to wipe my HDD completely and started from scratch. Installed PoL from the WotG disc and then installed ffxi and all the expansions and was able to download the update with no problem at all. Now I can finally start to enjoy the update!

so im just going to buy an unused copy of ffxi with the HDD off ebay and install it in my new ps2 i bought from gamestop, i still have all the expansion disc so once it gets here ill just install everything and be able to log on, $40 bucks isnt to bad, but SE still sucks that it has come to this, cause sending it back to SE to be refurbished woulda cost the same i paid for the one at gamestop.

Bootable software on the HDD locks to the PS2 that installs it. Remember how you had to reinstall POL Viewer when you bought the HDD because it was locked to SCEA's install system. After ToAU came out, sometimes FFXI would also lock, and you'd have to reformat the drive in the new system with HDD Utility Disc and completely reinstall everything. You can move the HDD, you just may have to reformat it in the new system for it to work.

I got my ps2 working now, had to wipe all my user data and reinstall each disc and then updated for 12 hours.

I also fixed my ps2s disc reading error by cleaning the lens around the laser. Just search youtube, ps2 repair. Anyone with disc reading issues should check into it, took less than 5mins.

Even deleting all old mail and screenshots I seem unable to update my ps2... I can't seem to find where the POL background images are saved, those are the only things I couldn't delete. I'll have to ask my husband when he gets home if he even wants to bother swapping out the disc reader to try a reinstall... to install WotG on it years ago we had to put in a whole different CD drive from another ps2 (we have 3 here ^^; all old ones, one a JP version), do the install, then swap the old drive back in before doing the updates. chances are we'll just retire the old girl and use our ps3 for bazaaring/gardening mule account...

OK, my PS2 finally updated and I have all the files from the current version ripped. However, my main computer which I can torrent on just died (or at least all the USB ports on it). I can't run torrents where I am right now, but if someone has a place I can upload the RARs, 20 of them at 1.9 GB, I could start uploading them now.

This is NA FFXI, I haven't touched the JP one in a while to update. You need a way to run uLaunchELF on your PS2, and I can make a FreeMCBoot memory card if anyone wants to send me theirs.

Uploading the files to that share as I post this.
