I don't give a shit about any religion either but why taking the risk of offending someone if you could also just leave it and name that club different/give it another theme? It's a bit annoying...

I know Firas and i think he can somehow deal with it. But there are extremists. And every extremist has a strong faith in something. If someone makes fun of it in any way or just ignores the ideals that go along with it means he automatically questions everything that person believes in. You could also see it as an attack on a personal level. Of course this ends in frustration, anger and what not.

Now if you know that Mecca and the Kaaba is the most sacred place to a lot of people and that those people don't really worship nightclubs that much, why build one that has so many similarities to that place and name it that way?

But then again you just can't do very much these days that doesn't offend some person or group on this planet...

I think it's great that you made this thread Firas. Maybe some people will understand how important faith (and what comes along with that faith) is to some people and that you have to respect that and deal in a sensitive way with it.

    Greetings from Berlin, Rumo

Why? Faith is the abandonment of rational thought, why is that something to be respected?

Because it helps people to get along better?

Because if you respect someone and what he does/likes/believes in he will feel better?

For some people their faith is very rational. It always a question of perception. And everyone has his own reality.

Still can't tell if Firas is an epic troll or an epic idiot, but this thread was pretty hilarious regardless.

About the french "hijab ban", I'd like to clarify this : it was never meant to be a specific hijab ban.
It's inscribed in France's laïcity system (that belief is a private affair), and they do take that tradition very strongly, going so far as to prevent the president from publically expressing his beliefs.

Their law, thus, is just furthering that concept : they decided to ban all religious symbols in schools. The hijab is included, but so is the kippah or the crucifix, for instance.
It only became "the hijab ban" when a particular religion got its panties in a bunch, while the others didn't care.
Still a weird and pretty retarded law, but the initial motivation really wasn't to troll muslims.

If Firas really wants to get offended, he should look at the belgian ban. Unlike the french, we're assholes enough to specifically target the burqa and offer no real reason for it. And not only in schools, anywhere in public.

If only there was some sort of method we could use. A method that looks at naturalistic claims on an empirical basis, maybe even based on the idea of reproducibility and internally consistent logic. Something where the preponderance of evidence could point towards the most probable solution to a given question, or at least provide evidence against outlandish claims that couldn't be verified. What could we possibly call such a method? Oh well, just a pipe dream. Such a method sure would take care of this "multiple realities" business. Heck, even the leadup to this method, before consistent empirical data could be gathered and it's just people thinking through these problems, could probably take care of such a squidgy notion centuries before this method I have envisioned. Maybe some day!

The reality is, it doesn't matter what your beliefs are, nature doesn't give a shit. The reality is faith isn't something that should be respected. If people found comfort from beating other people should we respect their belief? There is no rational basis for faith. If there was it wouldn't be faith.

I'd point you towards the Crusades, the book of Joshua, and pretty much most of the rest of history concerning the Abrahamic faiths and argue that religions, and by extension faith in such religions, does in fact not help people to get along better.

Because if you respect someone and what he does/likes/believes in he will feel better?
I should respect a religion that teaches that women are to be subjugated and oppressed? Women are not subhuman creatures, they are human beings equal to men. Thus there is no logical path that arrives at the conclusion that they should be treated as being beneath men. If they are equal, they should be treated as such, and to respect a line of thought that diverges from this basic human right is to be complicit in it. Whether it hides behind the banner of religion or just simple misogyny, wrong is wrong.

For some people their faith is very rational. It always a question of perception. And everyone has his own reality.
Matrix argument, the door is that way ->

oh post-modern relativism. How many times does this argument have to happen? I blame Sesami Street et. al. for subverting the rational faculties of an entire generation.

I love a good old religion bashing thread. My faith in humanity is always squandered every time. I'm going to ponder a guess that no one in here has ever even taken a high level philosophy class. If that's the case, then I'll have to respond to this thread with "lol"

    12 pages, interesting

    hello rumo. miss you man

perhaps i wasnt clear. i had two points in this thread.

1- Mecca is the most sacred place on the planet for muslims; this place goes back to Abraham (PBUH). I posted the story of the two bikers from cape town just to give you an idea on mecca and muslims. That being said; having a night club with drinking, women, music etc. and calling it the holiest place on the planet (for muslims) is considered degrading and insulting.

Other religion wouldnt make a big fuss about such issues, doesnt make it alright for the whole world to do the same, "hey if the christians arent complaining, then noone should complain" attitude is just retarded. in every religion there are different criterias, standards, laws, etc. atheists think, all religions mean the same thing since they are all under religion. This is completely false no dispute about it. the only thing they share in common perhaps is the worshipping part. the rest can all differ and even conflict with one another.

2- There is a possibility that things may get out of hand, Islam does not promote violence in any way, however, people arent perfect, individuals act differently.
there is ignorance in some muslims, they react in a totally nonislamic way. Religion and ignorance is dangerous. no doubt. and we cannot deny this. but a good understanding of religion is something else. This is when an ignorant angry muslims would show his love to his religion by hurting people, and saying in the name of God.
the murderer of John Lenon, said God told him to do so...no God didnt tell you to do so. its your ignorance.

so, morality, respecting one another is a high standard for a good society, a prosperous one. people need to build relationship with one another and understand one another. civilized people

so crazies do exist in the world, and it may provoke them.

measure both these elements, and i personally come up with a result saying: the club shouldnt have been called Mecca.

i have nothing more to say. you can carry on with your mockery

so your policy is never do anything that could in any way offend anyone? and never to do anything that someone might react to in an extreme fashion?
