    hello rumo. miss you man

perhaps i wasnt clear. i had two points in this thread.

1- Mecca is the most sacred place on the planet for muslims; this place goes back to Abraham (PBUH). I posted the story of the two bikers from cape town just to give you an idea on mecca and muslims. That being said; having a night club with drinking, women, music etc. and calling it the holiest place on the planet (for muslims) is considered degrading and insulting.

Other religion wouldnt make a big fuss about such issues, doesnt make it alright for the whole world to do the same, "hey if the christians arent complaining, then noone should complain" attitude is just retarded. in every religion there are different criterias, standards, laws, etc. atheists think, all religions mean the same thing since they are all under religion. This is completely false no dispute about it. the only thing they share in common perhaps is the worshipping part. the rest can all differ and even conflict with one another.
I think most people in the thread could give 2 shits about what Christians think. I suspect most people think it's stupid for its own merit. If your religion has a problem with it, it's your religions problem, not the rest of the world. When your religion starts telling people what they can or can't do or say, that's when most people take issue. I would fully support the "Thank god the jews killed Jesus sik resort" because they have every right to do so. If you don't like it, don't give them your business. Organize a protest. The problem is you think something that is sacred to you should be respected by others. That's just stupid.

there is ignorance in some muslims, they react in a totally nonislamic way. Religion and ignorance is dangerous. no doubt. and we cannot deny this. but a good understanding of religion is something else. This is when an ignorant angry muslims would show his love to his religion by hurting people, and saying in the name of God.
the murderer of John Lenon, said God told him to do so...no God didnt tell you to do so. its your ignorance.

so, morality, respecting one another is a high standard for a good society, a prosperous one. people need to build relationship with one another and understand one another. civilized people

so crazies do exist in the world, and it may provoke them.

measure both these elements, and i personally come up with a result saying: the club shouldnt have been called Mecca.

i have nothing more to say. you can carry on with your mockery
Beliefs shouldn't be respected for the sake of it. I can think of many beliefs not worth respecting, many of them being religious. Respecting others beliefs doesn't equate to a "high standard for a good society." In reality, where the rest of us live, we measure the amount of respect an idea deserves based on its merit. So far all I see is a lot of people getting upset because they take a fairy tale too seriously. If a crazy person thought the supreme god of his religion was called Bob and threatened anyone called Bob to change their name "or else!" I wouldn't blame the Bob's of the world. If someone wanted to name their son Bob just to piss them off I wouldn't care because the original claim of offense is retarded to begin with.

Edit: Simple put, you don't get to make up shit and then get offended when people don't take it srsly.

The world would have less violence/crime if people respected one another. Is it too much to ask, respect your fellow man? I think not.

Your culture nor your religion are special because they have a perception of higher grades of orthodoxy over other Judeo-Christian structures. Atheists / agnostics don't lump all of the silly rules together as being the same, we just think any of the foolish imaginary practices and laws that come from fictional books are just as ludicrous as the other wether it's eating the body of christ in a biscuit or not being able to draw the picture of mohamed. So you're right, there is no dispute about it, believing in Islam or Judiasm or Christianity is just as crazy as believing in Scientology.

Mecca was the name of a city that a self-styled prophet decided was the holiest place on earth. That's right. It's not a holy word, it's not a holy place, it's the afterthought of a megalomaniac. If you're so fanatical about your beliefs then judgement will be passed by a being far greater than you or me. You have no right to decide what is polite or not regardless of what your religion is. If it does not directly cause your and yours physical harm or detract from your quality of life your opinion on it amounts to a pile of shit.

Mecca has been used for years and years and years to describe something of central importance and aspiration for a particular following of people. Your religion can't control the world through forced sensitivity, everyone sees shit they don't like. Tolerance is more important to society than moderation.

Is it too much to believe someone meant no intentional harm by the naming and decorating of their business in another country? It's crazy to assume that one group believing something is sacred means everyone else in the world needs to walk on eggshells around it.

    And I still insist:
Submitting to fear of this worst-case scenario is letting terrorism win. Its outright terrorism and frankly by direly warning us and trying to get us to be concerned about the response, you are - in a very minor way - contributing to and supporting terroristic aims. At the very least you are doing nothing to stop it and the indifference is helping perpetuate the minority extremists' attitude that they have the Islamic community's backing.

Well, the answer's obvious, now : Firas is Eric Cartman.
Seriously, his whole defense is exactly the same as Cartman's in the Cartoon Wars episodes :
    1. "It's disrespectful of muslims."
    2. "Ok, putting respect of muslims aside for a minute, it's likely to elicit terrorist acts on our soil!"

Atheists don't have a hive mind, you know. We tend to not all think the same.
No holy book to dictate how we should feel about X or Y.

I certainly don't think of all religions in the same way : the abrahamic religions are a major blight upon society, whereas some are just benign (if silly) delusions.

    Sura 9, verse 5 disagrees :
"Fight against those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued."
(in before "out of context" - no context justifies that ; also in before "it's one verse in the whole book" - there's plenty more of those)

But it does explain very well your attitude in the beginning of the thread (before backpedalling) : wanting the club owner to submit to your will.
His freedom doesn't stop where yours starts, it stops where parliament legislates it does.
The spanish parliament apparently edicted no law saying you can't name your club "mecca", so he can and you'll have to deal with it.

You can build a mosque and call it "the Bertrand Russell center of holy worship", "Also sprach muhammad (when he wasn't raping a young girl)" or "Shit on El Cid's grave" if you want to have a petty retaliation.

Firas I believe that it is my god-given duty to rape the wife of every muslim on earth. When you get married, please present her to me so that I can practice my beliefs, which are sacred to me. If you don't, other people believe like me, you know, and one of them might be crazy. Therefore, you should respect my beliefs and let me bend that bitch over.

    Spoiler: show
No I'm not comparing mecca to rape, I'm just making a point about the insanity of "respecting" (read: deferring to) others' beliefs without question.
