People are talking as if xi was ever a failure. Never, nope. No mmo has subscripts like WoW, but xi is definitely the princess of mmos. My baby.

Hm.. Played FFXI forever, hated XIV after a week and a half after CE launch. Nothing amazing will be done soon, just going to wait until ps3 release and look into it then.
Edit: It's funny because I quit ffxi cold turkey for a long time, and the only thing XIV has done is make me consider playing FFXI again because If I play an MMO, it may as well be complete.
It's a "successful" MMO, just on a very small scale. That said, it has had its fail moment, but nothing that knocked it out of the running. Its subscriptions are maintained by a small amount (as mmos are concerned) of loyal fans/fanboys. If you look at any "top ten moorpg" lists, ffxi isn't exactly topping the charts in popularity. Just because a game is still active doesn't mean it's kicking all sorts of ass in the market.
XI wasn't a small success, but a rather big one. Most MMOs don't have subscriptions like WoW and XI held a strong 2nd/3rd place for most of its life in subscriptions(this might be ignoring some main-land asia MMOs, I forget). Before WoW, it blew games like EQ away. There has been plenty of big name games which have toppled XI with a 1 million launch or something like, but they all ended up shrinking below XI's numbers. XI's success has been pretty ignored by the gaming media/blogs, while less successful games like EVE haven't. It was quite odd.
There seems to be a lot consideration for a magical WoW killer, but not the MMO which also been unkillable for most of its life as 2nd place. Well in truth almost all of the MMOs which have had bad launches lived on with their own communities and improvements. From AoC to LotR to WAR. One reason I am not concerned with how successful XIV is.
They just tend to end up being cash-shop f2p games. Not a fate I'd want for any game.
B2p, and I don't think the cash shop means the same thing in that game. It'll more like wow "cash shop" from what I've heard.
When I saw the title for this post on Lodestone I thought: "Oh god, they're pulling the plug on the game."
Then I read it: "....OH SHIT!" It was like one of those "at first I was like ... but then \o/"
I'm rocking this avatar proudly. Fuck the haters.
Well, hold on to your onion helms, gentleman. Now that the game has a future, one day, these months we've endured will put us in Veteran status. Complete with old man sayings like "You youngin's got it easy. In MY day..."
Bravo, Square. Bravo.
I don't believe half the shit they've said in this article.
They seriously wouldn't put some guy who has no MMO experience, or any real notable game experience at the top of this game if they meant it to be anything good.
My Christmas wish for the new dev team:
Add:
AH
Auto Attack
Xp chains or improved group xp system
MP regen from resting
Remove:
Fatigue
Gear Damage
Anima
What the hell is the obsession with the auto-attack? Implement an ability queue and that's it. As XII is XI-offline, XIV can be XIII-online.
Idk man... Maybe what this franchise needs IS new blood. Let's give the guy our support. Ya?
From what I've read, he was the producer/director/big guy in charge whatever of Chains of Promethia, which is arguably the best expansion of FFXI. That certainly adds credibility to his name, and lets show some faith. * EDIT: I apparently have my people backwards. The rest of my view stands, however: *
They know they fucked up, they made a massive re-structuring to address it. In the business world, this is a stock price multiplier for a reason. Good things shall come. They aren't going to gamble again. They know exactly what we want. Perhaps the last head honcho was too stubborn, but I don't think they'd fire/hire with that same attitude.
"Problems cannot be solved with the same mentality that created them." - A. Einstein
That was Komoto, the former director.
This new guy is so weird choice it will either be a blazing success or a huge failure. At least he has actually produced and directed titles before.
Thank you for the correction. To be honest with you, I've never paid attention to the staff or their names. I know that from a purely business stand point (and lets not forget, this is a business), if a managing director was screwing the pooch this bad, and causing a company to literally hemorrhage money - he would've been fired a long time ago.
I don't mean to beat a dead horse, as I'm sure everyone still agrees to the idea too but....it just floors me that they deviated so far from the two sure-fire bets they had to base this game from. I'm referring to XI (which has one of THE most loyal player bases in MMO history) and WoW (which has a SOLID subscription base because of the game itself).
Why reinvent the fucking wheel >< Ugh. This game dying would've been the equivalent of natural selection in the digital sense. That said, I don't want that to happen. I have hope, faith and now its justified.
