Accidentally hit f5 and lost my post, so gonna keep this somewhat brief

Are you newly an atheist? If not, i'm not sure how you didn't come to these conclusions a long time ago. Obviously religion is an incredibly effective way of controlling people, as is all brainwashing. I agree, it was an excellent tool to use to control people in the past, but in 2010, it really isn't, and it causes more harm than good.

One problem is that it's not very effective in a global perspective. With many different religions, people fight over religions all the time. In a  closed setting where everyone believes the same thing, there isn't nearly as much violence caused by religion (though there's still plenty, such as with homosexuals, etc). Additionally, it  is very, very difficult to change, which wasn't originally a problem, as it obviously coincided with current ideas, but as social norms change, and religion doesn't, it is a problem.

One thing you mentioned was policing people. If you go back a couple hundred years, the police must have been nigh useless. They didn't use finger prints, DNA, or any other modern forensics for catching criminals, they had no cars to respond to a situation in a timely fashion; not that it mattered without phones, radios, etc to alert them of a crime, the culprit would have been long gone before they even knew something happened, let alone arrived at the scene. You'd have to be retarded to get caught by police 500 years ago. That's not the case anymore. Police can be alerted of a crime instantly, and often arrive within minutes, depending on the situation. And even if they can't stop anything from happening, or catch a criminal before they get away we have numerous different ways to identify them.

It also causes many problems for Science. I'm sure i don't even need to go into details on this one.

I'm all for controlling people, but religion is a very inefficient way of doing so. We can still brainwash people in other ways, without all the bullshit.

Society itself seems to control the intelligent without empathy. There's a certain amount of shame in bringing about sadness, disorder, unrest, trouble, etc. among other people. Regardless of whether you believed you will be punished by some higher power or not, we're raised to believe it's bad- not because it hurts other people, but because it hurts our own image. Our pride.
