I was going to suggest that sweet spots be listed as +5 through 0 to -5 I'll update this post with all the fish's sweet spots and favored tackle I've discovered once I remember them.
The Black Shroud
Yug'ram Salmon: -2
Crayfish: -2
is there list somewhere what baits does what? thinking of starting fishing
Each fish has their favorite baits now, and as far as I've seen, very little has been researched on that topic. I'm too drunk to start listing things, but I know of some bait/fish combinations that will work. Even if a fish doesn't favor a bait, you can still catch them with it. Fish/bait favored combinations are just more likely to bite.
So Truth of Seas doesn't seem all that impressive right now... what was it before the patch? I thought all the gathering classes had the "same" rank 30 ability. I have to admit I wasn't looking forward to getting FSH to 30 for it.
Yeah, I'd say 'Truth of Seas' is pretty much poo considering how common it is to gather shards in the first place... I think I get some shards maybe 2/3 of the time already. Until they make crystals and clusters available through gathering, there's something wrong with you if you're focusing your gathering efforts on collecting aetheryte. When I can kill a single, easy-prey Hoverfly Swarm as a rank-27 Pugilist and have it drop 2 different crystals and 16 of 3 different shards... there's some pretty bad imbalance going on with gathering.
So far, I've purchased every available Fisher ability outside of 'Dowse IV' (I skipped it) and the final 'Master of Fish' (no access yet). 'Clever Arc,' on the other hand, is pretty damn awesome. It's great for gathering either at nodes past your rank or trying to grab those difficult items that take multiple hits. Optimal Rank: 1 is not too shabby either.
Right now, on all three gathering classes (FSH-31 BTN-15 MIN-15) I generally always keep on:
Clever Arc (slows remainder decrease rate)
Way of Plenty (start with more remainder)
Nature's Bounty (more rare shit)
Red Coral = -3
Blue Coral = -3
Hammerhead sharks are fairly common outside of boat dock. -2 with floating minnow
Boat Dock? Ferry? On the Uldah end?
Yeah, there's a small spot you can ocean fish at the Thanalan ferry docks off the edge of the cliff, after you enter the gate, just before you step onto the docks (since you can't actually fish on the dock itself). You'll have to come from Limsa Lominsa to fish there, I think, or else the ferry will take you away.
Ah yes, that would make sense. Hadn't dawned on me, thanks. :3
Thanks for clearing this up for me :D
I was actually talking about outside the gates but you are right you can fish inside too if you either come from LL or log out and then back in after adding your name to passenger list. The easier route is right outside the gate though if you arrive there coming from Uldah.
So it appears there are different sweet spots for different regions (e.g. Thanalan, The Black Shroud and La Noscea). Should we tentatively also note the nearest camp? E.g. Cedarwood, Bloodshore, etc?
Skull Valley - Coral Butterfly (+3), Tiger Cod (+2), Sea Cucumber (-4), Malm Kelp (-4), Razor Clam (-4)
Bloodshore - Bianaq Bream (+1), Rothlyt Oyster (-4), Malm Kelp (-4), Sea Pickle (-4)

Feel free to mention any fish/bait combinations where you got "The fish are biting at your ____" message and then found out what fish you had on the line via catch or loss.
Here are (what I thought) were the posts most of interest from the mining thread:
Rereading my posts, it looks like "something big" means a fish that prefers your bait bit your line because I think I've only seen that message following a "the fish are biting on your ____"
