    Spoiler tagged it.

But at this point I think everyone on BG has completed it.

    Spoiler: show
Some people were being a bit facetious when they were saying the reaper logic was nonsense. Mostly because they only attack highly advanced organic species and leave all others alone, and they even mention this. And they don't even wipe out those species they attack, they preserve their DNA within reaper forms. I understand that. What did not convince me was the rationale that this was the only way to prevent synthetics from destroying organics. Or that all synthetics would only be interested in destroying all organic life. The presumptions they were making did not seem rational at all. But this unconvincing motivator wasn't what made the ending bad to me.

I agree with you BK. I just think Bioware themselves overhyped how "different" the endings would be to the point that it was like when a friend overhypes a movie to you and it is disappointing when you see it. They set the expectations too high and didn't quite get there. I enjoyed the game and thought the end was "ok"...but I was expecting amazing and was a little let down after. The levels that some of the fanboys are complaining are a little asinine though, which shouldn't be surprising considering fan is short for fanatic. I think anytime a company takes something that really resonates with a small group of fans, then opens it up to a much wider audience, those first fans feel left out or sometimes betrayed.

Its the obligatory bad guy logic, or more likely, they see it as the inevitable.

    In my opinion:

    Spoiler: show
The original reapers were a high advanced Organic race, that created an unchained AI that dominated them all. They saw the only way to prevent this from happening in the future, and the only way to correct their mistakes was to become what destroyed them. 500000000000 years later, they seek to continue preventing that ultimate AI from existing again

Side note: Playing this game and then going outside to look up at the stars makes me feel incredibly small. /sagan

Interestingly enough (and this is technically no spoiler), it is mentioned that the protheans themselves had to deal with a powerful synthetic species that came to be because their organic creators were taken over. However, if you take the quarians/geth as an example, you have to wonder how much of it all isn't the organics' fault, and how inevitable it really is.

The geth really do seem to be the perfect synthetics though.

They have no innate desire to do harm to other creatures

I haven't followed the lore very closely, but what about that one semi-organic geth you're lead around during the qurian arc? At the end he was like, "aha! and now the geth will destroy the qurians!" when he finished uploading the reaper stuff.

Initially I let him do it because the geth are fucking awesome, then I restarted and changed by decision because I felt lied to

I agree with this. The Geth only reacted to the Quarians attempts to destroy them. When they could have wiped them out, the Geth let them retreat.

I'm thinking he's talking about the Geth VI, it's kind of like the construct queen in that sense, if you trust it it ends up backstabbing you regardless of what your status with Legion was (or so I've been told, don't actually know anyone that let Legion die in ME2).

I mass effect 2'd on xbox and got 3 for PC so I never imported. My game never knew legion existed

Couldn't figure out how to rename game saves from websites correctly for mass effect 3 to read, either

    Edit: hold up

does that mean you managed to get the quarians and the geth to join you? Or is it that just the geth joined and the qurians were all mad at you and stuff and didn't help like the solarians in the genophage stuff if you save the krogans. I want to do that in my next playthrough.. is it reliant on your paragon rating? pretty sure I had over 75% at the time and I think I did almost every extra quest I had active at the time.
I wanna do this on my next playthrough

dunno why the hell anyone would be 100+ pages into this thread without knowing the ending yet, but spoiler'd anyway
    Spoiler: show
My problem with the Reapers' plan is that it denies free will to any life-form, organic or synthetic. (a bit off-topic, but I wonder how they would classify organic robots...) Even if synthetics will always win out and destroy organics, which the evidence doesn't support, why interfere? Sapient life is sapient life. All the Reapers accomplish is removing choice. There's nothing to suggest that new Reapers retain anything of their people through instrumentality, so how is that any better than extinction?

And how the flying fuck is Synthesis supposed to be a good ending? Again, it takes away choice and violates the free will of every sentient being in the galaxy.

    Remember this?

Reapers went from godlike sanity-draining eldritch abominations to... "prevent lifeforms we arbitrarily favor from being destroyed by lifeforms we arbitrarily don't favor by killing them all". The plan is certainly incomprehensible... because it makes no godsdamn sense.

Man, shepard's voice sounds so much better now.

    Spoiler: show
Yea, i also did not get why it even mattered if organics were wiped out in this galaxy. How many galaxies are there in the universe? How many galatic civilizations exists and will exist? The reapers only seemed to control our galaxy, so clearly they know nothing of other galaxies, so why act as if the organic life in this galaxy is the only life in the universe and the one that is worth irrationally guarding from oblivion from their own mistakes?

They hit you over the head pretty hard with the "evolution is the key" idea in the series. Javik talks about it extensively and says something like it's the only thing that matters. Kinda curious to see what the universe looks like 500-1000 years in the future when ME4 comes out. That is what the ending felt like to me...a setup for the next game. Each story reached a conclusion, but you don't get to see the ramifications of that. (ie, Eve and Wrex lifting the Krogan to a real future...or Wreave causing the galaxy to exterminate the Krogan eventually)

I find it really interesting that the Protheans were uplifting species left and right...it's a great way to create a subservient empire that looks at you like gods...which it seems is almost exactly what they did.

edit: @ Kuya, that's a really interesting point that I never thought about. Makes me feel really small all of a sudden too. Gonna go outside and see if I can see Jupiter tonight. >.>

What evidence? the whole geth/quarian thing is insignificant since the geth are not the type of synthetics the reapers are referring to, the geth were made for working they are not some kind of superintelligence (at least not yet)

original geth/quarian shit in a nutshell:

    Spoiler: show
Legion asked his owner if he (legion) had a soul. Quarians decided that meant they needed to eradicate the geth, geth defended themselves. When quarians fled their home planet/system, geth had the chance to chase them down and kill them off, but they didn't, they only prevented the quarians from destroying them then kept to themselves basically peacefully until "heretics" / reaper involvement.

    me3 stuff...

    Spoiler: show
legion asking if he has a soul is kind of to imply that they are in fact at that point but still don't want to harm anything

further, the point is stressed that they want to leave the quarians alone when you're at the point where legion goes to upload the reaper data to the rest of the geth, he has repeatedly stated that they want to be peaceful, the reason you're put in a situation where it's one or the other is *entirely* on the quarians and the fact that they will wipe out the geth or leave the geth with no choice but to wipe them out...

which all ties in to the ending crap with the whole theme basically being that if you believe evolution is inevitable and extremely important, you'll eventually come to conclusions that lead you to always assume the worst from it and function accordingly... and you're going to destroy the universe

the point was stressed even further in that the "saved" geth went batshit for a while when they came to the conclusion that the worst was inevitable and decided to team with the reapers, and then of course came to their senses and remembered god is good

the entirety of mass effect is religious propaganda yay
