Ok. Here's my shot at fixing the ending.

Citadel is moved to Earth because Reapers are aware of the threat the crucible poses.

Epic space battle to get crucible into position.

Crucible fires through the relays sending out a energy wave that disrupts the bio-mechanical connections in the reapers bodies. gives conventional combat a chance to succeed.

Plot twist! (sorta) Shepherd was affected by the crucible because he was rebuilt with reaper tech! Discovers Harbinger is the network hub for the whole reaper fleet and destroying it will severely cripple the Reapers. (possibly kill Shepherd in the process?)

Harbinger is too strong to bring down, boarding it is the only option. Good thing you have the Normandy to get you there.

Epic battle inside Harbinger with Shepherd fighting bouts of indoctrination from Harbinger assaulting his mind.

Core reached! Plot twist! Illusive Man was aboard the Normandy the whole time! It was his ship after all and his trump card.

Illusive man assumes direct control of Harbinger. Fight! Persuading him causes his resolve to weaken and allow Harbinger to retake control. Fight!

Persuade causes Shepherd to survive the encounter.
90%+ crew survival rate causes Shepherd to survive the encounter by crewman rescue.

Reapers are defeated but not completely. They withdraw through the relays.

Plot twist!
Hostile Krogans attack
Hostile Geth attack
Hostile Rachni attack
If 1 faction strikes they are beaten. crisis averted.
If 2 or more factions strike battle ensues. The Leviathan race assumes control of Reaper forces and makes their move. Galaxy is enslaved. The End.
Saving Throw! One or more of your allies sacrifice themselves to Stalemate. Galaxy is saved but in chaos.

Epilogue based on your actions.

Geth/Quarian <3 or not. Tali shows her face for real.
Javik unites Collectors with Prothean memory chip if you dialogued him. He hunts them down if you didn't.
Krogans join the council and restore Tuchanka
Palaven, Earth, and Thessia slowly rebuild Safe or Unsafe from threats.
Batarians still enslaved by Reapers or Leviathans.
Salarians status dependant on Krogan situation. Possible wars.
Rachni join council races/Rachni under Reaper/Leviathan Control.
Garrus gets his statue on the citadel and becomes a spectre. Gets laid.
Grunt becomes C-sec. Things explode and Baily yells at him.
Kasumi teams up with Garrus.
Miranda teams up with Liara. Shadows get brokered.
Jacob does situps.
Joker get laid and breaks some bones in the process.
Vega and Jack drink. and keep stay in the earth alliance. Kaiden succeeds Anderson who retires or dies in the space battle. Ashley becomes a Council Spectre.

Shepherd (or love interest if Shepherd is dead) wraps up ending with different speeches based on results. Cue Normandy flying off into the far reaches of space.

EDI would have known about them. shepard & crew sneaking into the normandy to retake it in Citadel set off breach warnings which tipped off the clone. EDI would certainly be able to narrow it down even further.

Unless the illusive man programmed a failsafe into EDI that would prevent her from realizing that! This shit is easy to excuse, they've done far worse.

Didn't IM magically appear on the citadel in the ending anyway? Whatever, this isn't much worse.

pretty much. and anyway, that's all beside the point. The point is that it's easy to come up with endings that are better than the ones we got because the ones we got were so bad.

Nitpicking here but Illusive Man learned about the Citadel being the Catalyst before Sheperd did, it's not unreasonable to believe that when Sheperd made his move on the Cerberus base that IM was overtaking the Citadel at the same time.

Yup. Citadel's security has always been shown to have lots of holes with people constantly sneaking in with weapons and such. Hard to keep tabs on every section of a station that's 4x the size of Manhattan with people constantly coming and going across every section of it. Entirely different mechanic from sneaking onto a small military craft, especially considering the Normandy was likely airborne and entrenched in a battle in some way.

Actually, would the illusive man entering the citadel even have raised any red flags? No one really knew who he was, there weren't pictures floating around of him that we know of.

Started my first replay this week, got bored after the letdown of Jack's cameo... Jumped into multi again because i loved it, but wasn't expecting to find a lot of games going. Well, it's easier to join a game now than the first six months it was out. Either they finally fixed some of their matching mechanics, or there are just fewer requests to bog down the system, but I click join and actually join a game almost instantly (PC)!

Even more new classes and gear to unlock than when I quit. Some scifi co-op to help me cope with no Destiny PC release...

If you play gold matches you'll run into a ton of undergeared/underskilled scrubs. I spend a lot of time carrying people -_- Gets old seeing how long this game as been out.

Once you unlock the Geth Juggernaut it doesn't matter. You fucking carry everyone through Platinum runs. I may actually have to fire this up again. I've had the urge to play MP for a bit now.
