its like suddenly the DS version didn't exist.
It's just such a pity that they didnt port the DS version to PSP since its already there, and they could just make it look so much better since the PSP > DS graphically (and in terms of sound).
I think this makes FFIV the FF with the most number of version that have features unique to each release that isn't even found in subsequent releases.
FFIV now has:
original
easymode (aka FFII us)
advanced (features the additional trials dungeons and character swapping, bestiary)
DS (3d, VA, augments, doesn't have a bestiary i think)
and the PSP version, which will come with the extra in-between episode and TAY + art gallery, will lose the 3d and some VA probably..? idk.
I suppose in some ways i can understand if the reason why the PSP release is entirely HD2D is because they want the whole ff4 çomplete collection to look and feel similar. And it was probably easier to make FF4 HD2D than TAY 3D...
And overall, it makes the PSP release feel very much like the PSP releases of FF1 and 2. HD2D, with all those bonus features.
but i still have my gripes.
- with IV in hd2d, where is FFIII in HD2D for PSP?
like, keep consistent progressive continuity within series releases?
3 and 4 have already been released in 3d, why go backwards to 2d?
and if 4 goes backwards? will 3 go backwards too?
perhaps 5 and 6 can be handled this way? or will they get 3d treatment?
and why has 4 been redone so many effing times compared to 5 and 6, sequels and all? 6 was just as popular iirc.
but oh well, ill still get this one because i never played TAY nor DS FFIV.. because i never got down to completing DS III since it was terrible compared to the original (weakness = ftl)
I think it's due to the fact it established a number of the conventions that we're familiar with in the series and subsequently other RPGs as well. If I'm remembering right, 5 and 6 outsold 4 in Japan during their initial run on the SFC.
Off the top of my head I can list a few things that made 4 special
-Introduced the ATB system (as buggy as it was at the time, and we couldn't see the bars yet)
-Standardized the MP system that would become the norm (2 had it as well but it didn't stick till 4+)
-Set a higher standard for plot and storytelling, wove gameplay and plot in a new way (party members came and went according to plot events, characters had set jobs to match their stories*)
-First FF with a love story (overlooked in 5 and somewhat in 6, but became the norm 7+)
-First FF with a true main character, Cecil is your only constant party member and is most pivotal to the plot (much like the love story, a main character was also absent in 5, somewhat in 6, and became the norm again 7+)
-Introduced Summons and Summoners as plot devices (each characters job was relevant to the plot but SMNs would continue to show up as being of particular importance in later games)
*Worth noting that while 4 as a whole raised the bar for storytelling, these 2 things in particular were pretty much unique to 4. No other game has an ever changing party lineup that is completely scripted.
Also unique to 4 is that it's the only FF that offers zero character customization. While in general that's a minus it did allow them to balance gameplay and better weave it with the story.
From a friend of mine:
Spoiler: show
http://www.siliconera.com/2011/02/01...st-this-april/Square Enix confirmed Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection for the West. The PSP remake of Final Fantasy IV has been upgraded with detailed sprite work, similar to the art in the 20th anniversary Final Fantasy remakes.
Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection includes Final Fantasy IV and the direct to mobile phone sequel Final Fantasy IV: The After Years plus a new storyline linking the two games.
Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection will launch in Japan on March 24. Europe gets to fight the Magus Sisters again just a few weeks later on April 19. While we don’t have a release date for North America, we’re sure an announcement is coming.
Update: Not quite a North American announcement, but Amazon is taking pre-orders for Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection. The online mega-retailer is selling the game for $29.99 and says its coming here on April 19. Thanks for the tip Denpa no Sekai!
Update 2: It’s official, Square Enix USA confirmed the April 19 release date for North America.
cool, just preordered

Lets move on to V and VI
4 was never a favorite of mine and I couldn't stand playing it until it eventually came out for the DS. I hope they do the same thing for ff6 instead of doing all the remakes for IV...

Totaly can't wait for it.
It was bad enough what they did to Cecil in the DS remake but lipstick and eyeliner? You've got to be fucking kidding me.
He looks like the Bottom to Kefka's Top.
can't wait for this, IV is what made me fall in love with the franchise.
Some of the best music imo, I hope the remixes are well done.
I need to agree, the blue lip/heavy eye lines really don't look that great.
Might wait to purchase it, mostly since I'm curious if they'll adjust TAY any.
Yeah, big WTF on the lipstick/eyeliner. I was never a fan of Amano's art style (I know, sacrilege for an FF fan) to start with.
So it begs the question of what's better: Amano's lipstick and eyeliner or Nomura's obsession with belts and zippers?
