You don't seem to understand that without these people responding to the scene, many people around ground zero would have died, all the while the responders knew they were going to be inhaling the same gasses and dust the people they were trying to save were. If any of them have injuries or long-term illnesses for fucking trying to save lives, it only makes sense to give them money for it. I don't think running into the debris of falling skyscrapers from a terrorist attack while breathing in harmful gasses is in the job description for firefighters/EMT/police.

Sure, it's a firefighter's job to maybe go into a burning building if it's safe enough to do so without risking their life, but there's a large difference between that and being a first-responder for one of the most devastating terrorist attacks that has taken place on US soil. It's sad that people who have millions and even billions of dollars, as well as those in office who they support won't even fucking make an effort to help national heros here.

I don't get why the compensation for city employees responding to a building collapse is a federal matter - shouldn't their unions have workplace injury/illness compensation set up for them?

I totally agree that not passing this act for first responders is a bigger "Slap in the Face" than the so-called Terror Mosque.

$7.4 Billion? I would have said no too.

Shouldn't be aiming for extending tax cuts either.

    I dislike politicians.

They do it money for it. They call it a paycheck. When you sign up to be a firefighter, police, or paramedic unless you are a moron you should be aware that you will be entering life-endangering situations. It doesn't matter if it is a terrorist attack or a house fire, you are aware of the danger when you enter the situation and should expect to deal with the consequences thereof. They are given health insurance, and if this is not covered by it this anger should be directed at the insurance companies, not the government.

Jon Stewart just spent an entire show talking about this, including an interview with 4 9/11 first responders.

Volunteer responders don't have a VA hospital like Armed Forces veterans. You are saying that vets willingly entered dangerous situations and should have private health insurance and not government insurance. First responders to an attack on US soil there to save US lives should be treated with US tax dollars. You are a fucking moron, stop posting.

God forbid you or your family is ever trapped in a burning household, and the firefighters outside pause to take a vote amongst themselves to see if they really want to endanger their lives and deal with insurance that may or may cover their injuries.

The fact is the 9/11 responders didn't hesitate, they didn't debate the risks or worry about what they were inhaling. They simply went, and helped, and worked endless hours just on the off chance someone was still alive down there. If you can't appreciate that or, at the very least, admit they should receive financial compensation for their injuries then I am at a loss for words. For all the money this country wastes it's a fucking sham that some of it didn't go to them.

I thought this bill was not intended to cover just city employees, but all emergency crews who responded for search and rescue objectives?

That last House vote that just went through had a 278 to 148 vote for it. Mostly repubs, with some Dems extending the bush tax rates. However, one of the give backs from the right was the extension of unemployment benefits on the countries credit card... which the right just lamented they weren't going to do like 3 weeks ago.

Unfortunately it was his last show of the year and apparently the deadline for this bill is Jan.1st or something.

Rachel Maddow's show last night, for anyone who watched it, showed what i was talking about. Notice the difference between what the House has managed to pass these last few years, and then what happens in the Senate. Clearly the problem is located in one of these places.
